Key West Tarpon Fishing Charters – March 28, 2022 – Is it Tarpon time in Key West? Well, let’s take a look. The end of March usually marks the start of our tarpon fishing here on the southernmost island. The weather dictates every day how and what we fish with our anglers here at Dream Catcher Charters. We haven’t had the typical daily 20-25 mph easterly winds that March usually hits us with, but the late cold and odd wind directions are definitely having an effect.

Key West Tarpon Fishing Charters
As March comes to a close, I’d say it’s been a “typical” tarpon fishing year so far. As the year went on, we had a few days in February where the bite was hot. So hot that we say: wow, the season is about to start early. And then boom… They were gone and we were back to winter fishing. When March came around, we expected the wind and tarpon to show up normally in the coves and channels, and they did, but in crazy winds and unusual patterns that were hard to spot. That said, we took our photos in the normal spots and the stocked tarpon we usually see this time of year are in the right places and weather permitting, they are feeding. Overall, I’d say we’re off to a good start to 2022.

Since 1994, Dream Catcher Charter captains have been on the cutting edge of knowing where the tarpon are and when. Modern boats built with names like Yellowfin Yachts and aimed at tarpon fishing.
With this weather, every day is a moment of discovery. Today the weather is fantastic, but everything seems to be changing. I look at the three day weather forecast in fear that my boats will be removed from their jetties (just kidding). With winds around 32 MPH forecast for Wednesday the 30th (YIKES). It looks like Mars is trying to make up for the lighter wind days. However, after this week’s strike I look at the long range forecast and see great weather for good tarpon fishing until next Wednesday as April brings the high pressure Oaslies we are used to this time of year. Then I think everything will be fine again and we will start the tarpon fishing season at a higher level again.
The last two years with the outbreak of COVID, tarpon fishing has been a little slow for us here in Key West. This year, things are already looking brighter as we find them in more distant “hidden” places.
Tarpon fishing is a big part of what we do here at Dream Catcher Charters this time of year. When not distracted by incredible deep sea or reef fishing, our tarpon fishing trips are daily for us, usually twice a day. The captains I work with here are always knowledgeable and willing to follow up for their clients.

The last few weeks on the water have been great with Tarpon showing up around Islamorada and the Everglades. I had some Tarpon fly anglers aboard for the first time last week and they got lucky with very good weather and the tarpon were plentiful. Randy from Atlanta had dreamed of catching a big tarpon on a fly for years and he finally let one of the four fish he fed that day stay on the hook and we were able to put it in the boat for a quick photo and release. . Whenever I can make a fisherman’s dream come true, it’s really satisfying for me and that’s why I try so hard to make it come true.
I also had the opportunity to spend a few days in Key West with my good friends and clients Rich and Jorge, it is always a pleasure to fish with these two guys as they are fun and are as dedicated as can be. We had a difficult first two days with terrible conditions for what we went there and were trying to get the Holy Grail. It is allowed to eat a fly. We actually had 2 hours of sunlight to work with in two days of fishing, but when the sun came out, we took advantage and threw some crabs and put some nice leave in the boat, including a 30 pound monster. We had some luck with the fly rod, but not enough to get these smart fish to eat a fly. We were also able to find a large Tarpon and catch some nice fish that obviously broke loose during the fight.
Spring is here and the fishing will be just as good as summer. If you haven’t booked a trip yet, you should do so soon! Welcome to addiction. Exciting stunts and competitions keep people coming back year after year to experience this challenging fishery. Key West is one of the best tarpon fishing destinations in the world. Here in Key West, Florida, our great migrating tarpon show up in the spring. This usually starts in early March and lasts until around August. During peak season (April – June), we encounter thousands and thousands of migrating tarpon roaming the beautiful waters surrounding the Lower Keys. If I had to pick two months of the year to book a tarpon fishing charter, May and June would be the winners. Spring dates fill up extremely quickly, especially after anglers have had the opportunity to check out this incredible fishery.

Late summer/fall is also a great time of year to target our young tarpon (10-30 pounds) back home. They are ubiquitous and easy to transport with light equipment or flying equipment. The colder months (December through February) make it a little more difficult to find many of our larger tarpon, but there is still a chance to catch some if you know where to look and the conditions are right. Overnight tarpon rentals during these colder months are always action-packed and provide excellent opportunities to hook young tarpon on light tackle (10 to 30 pound average).
When someone says they’re going to “fly fish the Keys,” the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is targeting our most iconic inshore sport fish. Tarpon! Tarpon fly fishing in the Florida Keys and Key West is legendary and for good reason. Our clear waters and abundance of migrating fish make the Keys one of the best places in the world to target these flatfish. There’s nothing more cool than watching a 100-pound dinosaur slurp your fly in two feet of clear water.
