OnPoint Community Credit Union plans to open 20 new branches in Fred Meyer stores this year in the largest expansion in the credit union’s history.

The credit union in Portland will begin expanding this month by opening new branches in Cornelius, Hillsboro, Gresham and Sandy, according to Tori McVay, director of sales. By the end of the year, OnPoint will operate 55 branches in areas of Oregon and Southwest Washington.

“As our Southwest Washington and Oregon communities grow, we continue to grow with them,” said McVay. “We are a community-based organization, so when our members and the community tell us that more presence is needed, we listen.”

US Bank, founded in Oregon and based in Portland since 1997, said in October that it plans to close 32 branches in Oregon and three more in Vancouver, Washington. Wells Fargo plans to close 250 branches nationwide this year after closing 329 in 2020.

Onpoint Community Credit Union On Financial Literacy And Helping People In Meaningful Ways

Summary: Credit unions have long been known for focusing on the needs of their members and supporting the communities they serve, and this is certainly true of OnPoint Community Credit Union in Portland. The credit union provides modern banking products and services to meet various needs. It also makes it easier for members to do business with the organization through their preferred channel, in person, by phone or through digital banking services. Credit unions also provide a variety of financial services to members and the community. OnPoint also provides community support in the form of volunteering and financial donations to local non-profit organizations.

OnPoint Community Credit Union has come a long way since 1932 when 16 school teachers joined together to create an association to save money and create a safe place to extend credit for teachers and their families.

Originally known as Portland Teachers Credit Union, the organization changed its name in 2005 to reflect its new charter and larger membership.

But through it all, OnPoint Community Credit Union has maintained the value of putting members first and helping to build strong communities in Oregon.

Onpoint Credit Union Donates $62 Thousand To United Way

“We operate 36 branches and have $7.9 billion in assets,” said Tory McVay, VP and Chief Retail Officer of OnPoint Community Credit Union. “We have members all over the region and, we have members who live out of state and out of state who have maintained their membership, which is great because of technology.”

McVay said the credit union plans to expand significantly. It will open 20 new branches of Fred Meyer stores – part of the Kroger supermarket chain – in the area.

This expansion will make it easier for OnPoint Community Credit Union to reach more people and communities.

According to the credit union, “OnPoint has been improving the lives of our members and the communities we serve – including Portland, Vancouver, Eugene and Bend – for more than 85 years. “At this point, we became the largest financial community in Oregon with 420,000 members.”

Credit unions have long been known to provide excellent service to members. In the early days of credit unions, this was the main difference that set them apart from large commercial banks.

Today, credit unions can keep up with banks in terms of offering new products and services while keeping their roots strong. And OnPoint Community Credit Union takes their role seriously, McVay said.

Therefore, the organization strives to make it as easy as possible for members to do business with credit unions in any way that is convenient for them.

“Members have told us they want a choice,” McVay said. “So we have to rely on that and that our members have the opportunity to interact with us in person, by phone or digitally. Whatever works for them, don’t put them in a box and tell them how to interact. Or connect with us.”

Onpoint Community Credit Union Delivers Personal Service And Financial Education To Communities

McVay said OnPoint Community Credit Union’s approach to helping members can better support the organization and members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have unveiled a scheduling tool that members want to reduce their time, if you will, waiting in the branch,” he said. “And now we’re also introducing new online account opening technology.”

“It’s interesting because a lot of members don’t know how the technology works,” McVay said. “So to be able to train them and show them how easy it is to deposit money in an ATM or through their phone – they relied on this technology.”

“And we’re fine with that,” McVay said. “As long as they are choosing wisely the way or the way they want to work and they are not forced to do something they don’t know how or nobody talks to them about it.”

“Helping you achieve your goals is our passion,” according to the credit union. “That’s why we provide our members with the financial education and guidance they need to be comfortable and empowered to reach their financial goals.”

“We offer our members and community elders the opportunity to consult with our financial advisors to help them manage debt, budget, start an emergency fund, prepare for disasters or any of these things,” he said. “A lot of people are adopting it. And you don’t have to buy anything to be with these people.”

The credit union publishes and maintains an in-depth blog that covers many financial topics and is free for anyone to access, McVay said.

“We’ve created a lot of blogs with tips and tools that people can use to improve their credit,” he said.
