“We want to do what’s right for our members,” said longtime Dutrack board member Mike Ready. “That’s our ultimate goal. People care about people, and we care about our members and our employees.”

Dutrack was established on July 25, 1946. At the time, John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works employees were looking for a financial service option for themselves and their families.
However, instead of a for-profit bank, they envisioned a for-profit, membership-based credit union.
“Here’s a lot of employees coming together and saying they’re going to take over their bank, which was pretty revolutionary at the time,” said Jason Norton, DuTrac’s senior vice president of marketing and business development.
On August 5, 1946, employees of the John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works met in the basement of the plant to elect the first director of Dutrack. At that time, the credit union had 56 members and physical operations were small.

Norton said the first “office” was at the Dubuque (John Deere) plant. “It was just a desk and a toolbox with money. Eventually…it expanded into a real office inside the factory.
In 1969, the first Dutrack office opened outside the factory on Peru Street in Dubuque. When John Deere merged with Davenport Works Credit Union in 1985, it was the first step in Dutrack’s expansion into a community credit union.
“When we started, you had to be a John Deere employee or family member (to join the credit union),” said Ready, a retired John Deere Dubuque Works employee. “In 1985 we were allowed to open our charter to the credit union community. That means we can serve everyone in a certain area.”
Today, that area includes 21 counties in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. More than 120 employees in 13 credit union offices in Clinton, Dubuque, Dyersville, Eldridge, Maquoketa and Monticello, Iowa; Moline, Ill.; and the Quad Cities area.

He noted that Walter “Wally” Lester, from 1953 to 1984, had only had three CEOs since the company’s inception. Tom Service, 1984 to 2007; and Andrew Hawkinson, 2007 to present.
“Over 75 years, we have had only three leaders,” Reddy said. “I think that says a lot about credit unions and the leaders we elect.”
DuTrac has partnered with many local and regional credit unions over the years, and has grown its membership to more than 49,000.
“DuTrac is very personal when it comes to its members,” he said. “It’s our duty. We’re a company, working with each other to help them, for example, improve their credit score. … We’re willing to listen and try to find a solution.”

DuTrac offers a variety of financial services including auto, home, business and personal loans, savings accounts, credit cards and wealth management resources.
Credit unions emphasize financial education through programs such as Savasarus Kids Club, launched in 1994. Dinosaur mascot Sunny the Savasaurus teaches members 12 and under to develop good savings habits.
“(Sonny) has become popular with the kids,” Norton said. “He often appears at schools and parades.”
He has also participated in several regional and national meetings during his tenure as a board member. Dutrack’s variety of financial services sets the organization apart from other credit unions he sees at these events, he said.

“I don’t know what product or service we don’t offer that we might offer before others,” he said. “I think we have a great staff here at Twotrack, and we’re always looking for ways to improve our members’ experience.”
From the economic downturn to increased regulatory and reporting requirements, DuTrac has weathered the storm. The oldest in its seven-decade history.
Norton noted that the number of credit unions across the country has dropped significantly since his start in Dutrack, highlighting the challenges local organizations like his face.
“Dubuque only has about 60,000 people and many banks and credit unions have over $1 billion in assets,” he said. “It’s very competitive, but it also shows that we are all strong and efficient financial institutions.”

As it enters its next 75 years, Norton said DuTrac is committed to adapting to the changing face of the financial industry.
“Change is certainly possible, but we will also adapt and go with the flow,” he said. “That’s what we always do, that’s what makes us strong.”
