Wednesday’s crash near Batesville, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southwest of San Antonio, was the latest fatal traffic accident involving migrants since a March 2021 crash in remote Holtville, California, which recorded the highest death toll ever, when 13 people died.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, 106 people were killed in Border Patrol vehicle pursuits from January 2010 to June of this year. Deaths averaged 3.5 per year in 2019 but increased in 2020, leading officials to create a new policy for vehicle-related businesses with an eye toward improving safety.

The policy, announced in January, does not prohibit stalking but, according to US Customs and Border Protection, “provides a clear framework for weighing the risks of conducting an investigation, such as the danger the stalking poses to the public, against the power of the warrant. “Benefit or necessity”.

Local law enforcement has also been involved in fatal incidents in recent years. In June 2022, four migrants were killed in a smuggling attempt after a police chase in the South Texas town of Encinal, about 80 miles (130 km) southeast of Wednesday’s incident.
