It was there that Ted gained the experience, skills and understanding of the specialized defense strategy that has served him so well in the field of personal injury law.

Case for Brunswick Corporation where he successfully obtained a $9 million verdict for a young man who lost his leg in a boating accident. Ted claimed the boat had a product defect and convinced a jury to award $6 million in damages. Similarly, Ted handled a tire defect case in southern Idaho where he convinced a jury that the tire had been installed negligently and secured his clients $4.5 million. Judgment of the USD.

Ted was a lawyer who many years ago represented a young woman who was badly mauled by a bear on Mount Lemmon. Ted’s research and discovery revealed that the state of Arizona had known about this bear’s dangerous tendencies for some time and had violated its policy on capturing and releasing the bear. Ted obtained a multi-million dollar settlement for his client, the first of its kind in Arizona, if not North America. Most recently, Ted tried a LASIK eye surgery case for a United Airlines pilot that was awarded $4 million in Pima County. In the end, the case was settled for an amount where Ted was accepted on appeal. The case is the largest verdict in a LASIK eye surgery case nationwide to date.
Ted represented a young United Airlines pilot who had Lasik surgery that damaged his eye so that he could no longer fly. Ted received a $4 million settlement to correct this mistake.
Ted is recognized among America’s Best Lawyers, a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the International Bar Association, and a member of the American Council of Trial Lawyers. He is an elected member of the Arizona State Bar Board of Trustees, has served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Executive Committee and was recently elected Vice President of the Arizona State Bar. Ted also chairs the Bar Malpractice Insurance Program Task Force and the Organizational Collaboration Task Force, which helps implement the State Bar’s new social justice, diversity, and inclusion goals, and chairs the State Bar on the same topic.
In addition, Ted is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Arizona College of Law, a Pima County Superior Court Judge, an Arizona State Bar Fellow of the Year, and a recipient of the Walter Craig Distinguished Service Award.

Originally from Mansfield, Ohio, Ted has been in Tucson since his undergraduate years at the University of Arizona and graduated from the university’s School of Law. A father of four, he is active in the community on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in Pima County and is especially involved in youth activities as a Little League coach, FC Tucson Youth Soccer board president and chairman. . He was also a member of the President’s Club at the University of Arizona, where he and his late wife, Ann, established the Tara Nicole Schmidt Memorial Scholarship for UA “Have a Dream.” This scholarship has funded and continues to fund the education of deserving Arizona high school graduates.

Step Up to Justice helps lift people out of poverty through community education and emergency civil legal assistance; Take advantage of innovation, partnerships, advocacy and volunteering.
SU2J is a full-service civil law training and assistance center designed to bring justice to low-income Pima County residents who need an attorney but cannot afford it. We serve clients with valid claims in housing, family law, domestic violence, consumer fraud, bankruptcy, employment, probate and other matters. SU2J is privately funded and run by volunteers, so our doors are open to everyone, including clients who cannot be served elsewhere due to caseload limitations, conflicts of interest, national origin, or the return situation.
