The StarCar virus is constantly growing and changing, and as I have discovered, it is very contagious! Before the World Wide Web, I hunted, built, restored, and wrote about famous cars on the screen. So over the last 30 years or so, thanks largely to the Internet, some of the most famous cars and their stories have come to light. Some cars are harder to understand than others, but all iconic cars now have fan clubs, manufacturer websites, replica forums, etc.
So what should a patient zero like me do? I still like “Archaeology” (tm 2003, Nate Truman) “Discovering the history of a vehicle by digging inside it and finding out what happened to it over the years”

But I don’t want to build the same car twice. After the Batmobile, Keaton’s Batmobile, the A-Team Van, the Austin Power Shaguar, the purchase and addition of an audio-animatronic dinosaur in Jurassic Park Explorer, KITT from Knight Rider, and the simultaneous “collection ” and tracking hundreds of famous people on the move and on TV around the world, there was little to find or interest.
Then my friend texted me that 2015 was Marty McFly’s “THE FUTURE” in Back to the Future. I worked at Universal and was often on the set of BTTF in 1985. I remember they were filming in the town square and I would see the Delorean time machine whizzing by in the back. It was an amazing time at Universal Studios for some of the hottest TV and movie stars!
Fast forward to today, known as THE FUTURE, and I have too many friends with DeLorean time machines that creating such a machine would be redundant at this point. But this is the FUTURE! So I sat down and watched the movies with new eyes, laughing at what they thought 2015 would be like, and hoping to get inspired! 2015 was supposed to be the last big hit of the BTTF trilogy and I wanted to make something that wasn’t ready to die, boxed up and sold on eBay.
It didn’t take long for the film to remind me of one vehicle in particular, Marty McFly’s Dream Truck, which appeared in all three films! Two trucks were used in the film, both found and restored: one belongs to Universal Studios and the other is in the hands of a big fan who also owns a Delorean and a Libyan VW bus! That’s right, the originals should be there!

So I decided to make an exact copy for myself. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a 1985 Hilux Extracab 4×4, I didn’t give up. I kept looking, first all over Los Angeles, then Southern California, then all over the country. After a while I gave up looking for black. It seems all the 4WD trucks have been used as gardening trucks and have 400,000 miles and just as many dents. The 4×4 suffered a worse fate. Because of the fixed front axle, the 1985 trucks were sacrificed to the off-road world. They cut, they rolled, they broke, they revved up their engines, all looking for some fun in the wilderness.
I’m sure there are still some “work” trucks around, but remember, these trucks have been used, abused, and discarded. There is a small group of off-road enthusiasts who try to preserve their vehicles by eating other trucks. There are no “restoration” catalogs for these babies! Just landfills where the old trucks are taken away, and then one by one the still limping trucks fall down, and are attacked by those who continue to drive. I saw a group of guys get into a “new” truck at a junkyard and it was dismantled within minutes! Some parts needed, most were selling “organ transplants” on Craigslist.
After giving up on the search for the “perfect” donor car, I finally found one that has the right features. 1985, see Toyota 4×4 gear knob. Check. The Smitybilt’s rear bumper was also complete. Gray interior with seats? Check. I finally have a new project!
A McFly truck is like a Herbie or a General Lee: if you can find the right year make and model, the rest is restoration, parts sourcing and painting. Rust has killed the dreams of many top automakers, and these Toyotas, 30 years later, also fall into that category.

In the film, McFly’s truck was delivered NEW, still in the back of the tow truck, and was then seen in the garage at the end of the first film, freshly polished by Biff. Another truck can be seen on the road at the end of the third part (with some changes due to time travel), when Marty decides not to delay the race to the Needle. (He’s also the bassist on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “FLEA,” fun fact!)
So the target was a gloss black 1985 Toyota Hilux 4×4 pickup with Smitybilt fenders, KC headlights and a roll cage. Now you can search for a truck and find one with some or most of the required items, but either way everything will be worn out or moving in that direction. Either that, or it’s been “upgraded” to something “better” or newer, which leaves you with the decision to settle for some parts you know are wrong, or with a big bill to find and restore the original parts.
Ten or fifteen years ago this would have been a fairly simple and economical star car, but add another fifteen or twenty years and the trucks that everyone has seen on the road are reaching the end of their lives, and the engines are in second or third place.
After months of research and finding that it doesn’t work
