El Paso County Treasurer Colorado Springs Co – Colorado Springs, Colo. ()- The first property tax payment will be due in just three weeks However, some concerned homeowners told 11 News they are still waiting for their bills to arrive in the mail.

The El Paso County Treasurer said they are working to get them in the mail as soon as possible, but they are now available online.

“It’s very frustrating as a homeowner because in this particular situation we’re paying taxes out of pocket,” said Dina Fuqua, a Colorado Springs homeowner.

The filing process was pushed back due to a last-minute push by Colorado lawmakers for property tax exemptions.

“We want to take this extra time to make sure the information on the tax bill is accurate, so we do this extra check before we mail it out,” said El Paso County Treasurer Chuck Broman.

While two-thirds of the county is in foreclosure, homeowners like Fuqua are paying property taxes.

“I don’t know the exact numbers on my taxes, it’s a little difficult to plan,” Fuqua said.

“They can go ahead and jump online and make a request. “Then every night we update it and send it to people to access their email the next day,” Broreman said.

“I think it won’t be nearly as significant as they thought it would be, about 40%. “I think it would be generally, and depending on your property, it would probably be closer to 25 percent,” Broreman said.

The Treasurer’s Office added that if you have not received your statement by February 15th, contact their office.

I want to be a watchdog of local government spending. I strive to increase protection and accountability for taxpayer funds in El Paso County by increasing collaboration with the Treasurer’s Office and other county departments.

My first priority is to protect taxpayers I will protect taxpayers’ money by following authorized policies to make safe liquid investments that meet or exceed appropriate standards. I see this as a tremendous opportunity to review current practices, modernize technology platforms, and increase operational efficiency to reduce costs.

The treasurer is the central bank of the county. Our primary role is to properly collect taxes and fees so that the Board of County Commissioners has the resources necessary to carry out the essential functions of local government. Lynn Butt was named 2019 Assessor of the Year by the Colorado Assessors Association this month, courtesy of El Paso County Assessor Steve Schlicker, who has served in the county assessor’s office since 1999.

Republican Chuck Broreman swept the election night results with 64.68 percent of the vote against political newcomer and Democrat Richard Williams, who won the El Paso County treasurer’s race with 35.32 percent of the vote.

Broreman’s top priorities for the position are filing property tax returns in January and overseeing the transition of the treasurer’s office from a computer system that is more than 30 years old to an updated system.

He also decided to become a “guardian of local government spending” and find ways to streamline processes.

Republican Mark Flucher led Democrat Renee Rief for El Paso County Assessor with 59.48 percent of the vote, while Rief came in with 40.52 percent of the vote on election night.

Certified General Fluchers in the assessment license course will receive what will be the first change of hands since 2014. 

The assessor’s job is to assess and determine the value of the property and determine the amount of property taxes the homeowner must pay each year.

In this role, Flucher plans to create an outreach program that will help professionals and property owners better understand how the ad valorem tax works and where the money goes.

Flucher wants to upgrade the office’s computer-aided mass assessment (CAMA) software and move to a more modern version of a geographic information system (GIS) and a satellite service center.

Reiff, who has a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University-Pueblo and a master’s degree in public administration from the Keller Graduate School, hopes to advocate for property tax debt control for property owners and middle-income taxpayers.

Steve Schlicker led the election results with 59.45 percent of the vote against Democratic candidate Lisa Wilkes in a race for El Paso County Clerk and Recorder.

Schlyker, who is the county assessor, lists his top priorities as theft and fraud protection for residents’ homes, commercial buildings and parcels.

He also wants to focus on government efficiency and fiscal responsibility, including reimbursing the state for active taxpayer choices.

A former member of the Colorado Independent Redcrossing Commission in Congress wanted to start gathering Red Cross members from Wilkes County to represent all of El Paso County.

He also wanted to see more funding for community-wide mailboxes, updating and streamlining the system for greater efficiency for staff and customer experience.
