Two days after reporting a significant first-quarter loss, Bally Corp. announced Friday morning the opening of a new smoke-free section at Twin Rivers Casino in Lincoln.

The Providence-based casino giant on Wednesday reported a net loss of $173.9 million for the first quarter of 2024, compared with a profit of $178.3 million a year earlier.

During the earnings call, Bally President and CEO George Papanier blamed most of the hits on “bad weather” that drove away potential customers in January. However, he said those conditions will start quickly in February and March.
Papanier also cited reduced traffic at Bally’s Lincoln and Tiverton casinos due to “the construction of the Providence Bridge over Interstate 195,” the sudden closure of the Northwest Washington Bridge last December when state officials discovered the bridge was in danger of collapsing.
“One of the two bridges suffered a structural problem that caused lane closures that disrupted rush hour traffic,” Papanier said. “Unfortunately there is no immediate solution and the turmoil is expected to continue.”
Bally spokesman Timothy Louis declined to say how many customers the state’s two casinos have lost since the bridge closed last December.

State officials are moving forward with hiring contractors to demolish and rebuild the Washington Bridge on the western border, which officials aim to complete by August 2026. Initial estimates show the cost of the bridge replacement project could fluctuate between $250 and $300 million. According to estimates from the office of US Senator Jack Reid, the figure has risen to $360 million. Reed’s office requested a new assessment from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). A RIDOT representative could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon after receiving an inquiry.

But Le Gilbert, an organizer with Table Game Dealers Laborers Local 711, said the union won’t be satisfied until the Lincoln and Tiverton properties are completely smoke-free. Gilbert said Bally’s move to add a new smoke-free area was largely effective and made little change to business conditions.
“Although there are tables in this section, there are no active games that I know of,” he said. “There’s nothing but places there.”
Bally shareholders will vote on a proposal at a virtual annual meeting on May 16 that could clear the air for all of Bally’s businesses, which Trinity Health, which owns 440 shares of Bally, is asking its board to company to order. state the potential economic benefits of banning smoking in their properties.
