DES MOINES, Iowa – The population of Des Moines has grown in recent years, and the popularity of multi-family homes and townhomes continues to grow.

“It’s an influx of new residents who want to call Des Moines home,” said Derek Haugen of Indigo Living, a local property management company.
West Des Moines Affordable Housing Complex Opens, Already Mostly Leased
More than 1,000 new multifamily rental units were built in Greater Des Moines last year, according to the CBRE 2023 report. 530 of these were built downtown.
In the year 2024, there will be many discoveries, such as the Meridian in the Earth of Grey. Level, a brand new complex that opened last fall in the East Village, is 70% full.
“What you see in the choices you see is a direct result of demand,” Haugen told Local 5.
According to Haugen, the rent increases of the last few years are starting to come to an end. Affordable housing continues to be a big selling point for renters looking for their next home.

In addition to population growth, trends show that more people living or moving to Iowa are choosing to live in the metro area.
“We’re seeing about 15 percent of new tenants right now from outside the Des Moines suburbs, and half of them from outside Iowa,” Haugen said.
“The center is the center,” said Haugen. “It’s a place people want to go, and I think that’s another reason why everyone is getting more houses in the town centre.”
Rental companies are also trying to attract more people to their comfortable complexes. Hubbell Realty believes that amenities like dog parks, swimming pools, gyms or washers and dryers are more desirable than ever.

Hubbell also attributes the housing boom to higher home prices. Many people, especially young people, prefer to rent a home rather than buy one, they said.
