The fire, which broke out early Wednesday morning, is believed to be arson and remains under investigation as of early Thursday morning. The pastor of the church, Rev. Donnie Wilkinson, posted a video on social media on Friday asking church members to pray with him for “whoever did this horrible thing” and hope for repentance and the correctness.

Wilkinson compared the hope of the church to the time Jesus spent in the tomb after his death before rising again on Easter morning.

“Broadmoor will rise again,” he said. “We may be in the middle of Holy Saturday when we mourn what is lost, but we do it as people with hope. We mourn as people who know that our God will give us the things we need to rise again.”

Two fires were reported overnight at the church on Mollylea Drive at the corner of Sharp Road, the first at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday and the second around 4:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Fire Department.

The first fire was found in a different church, the meeting house, and the amount of damage, said the spokesman of the minister Mark Miles. It was determined to be arson, but Miles said investigators have yet to identify a suspect.

The second is near the church, in an apartment connected by a walkway, Miles said. The church was not damaged, but smoke did enter.

Miles said firefighters haven’t determined if the two are related, but it appears strange to have two fires on the same property.

Wilkinson said the church is continuing its current work, including providing food to those in need during the current coronavirus crisis. Some volunteers sewed masks for health care workers.

He said the central idea of Christianity is that “bad and terrible things are real, but in all of them God is with us.”

The church was founded about 65 years ago on a dirt road southeast of Baton Rouge. The surrounding community and the congregation itself have grown in number and diversity since then, Wilkinson said.

“The fire will never stop us,” Wilkinson said. “We look forward to victory in Christ, and we look forward to God bringing glory out of these ashes.”

Investigators say an arsonist set fire to a Baton Rouge church meeting room shortly after midnight Wednesday.
