Burnout And Turnover Among Us Dialysis Technicians: An Interview
Action against clinics that treat chronic kidney disease in California is a top legislative priority this year for the unions that represent health care workers. Now they open a new front in their crusade against the dialysis industry: ballot boxes.
The United Health Workers and Service Employees International Union presented two initiatives to state attorneys general on Wednesday that, if qualified, would appear on the November 2018 ballot. The union seeks to impose stricter rules on the staffing levels of dialysis centers and how much they charge.
The proposals are similar to pending bills that require for-profit dialysis centers, which treat more than 63,000 Californians with end-stage kidney disease. By ruling out the possibility of a ballot measure as a backup plan, the union takes a well-deserved path toward pushing for legislative action.
“We see this as a bipartisan approach,” SEIU-UHW spokesman Sean Wehrle said. “We want to make sure we have as many options as possible.”
