The victim believed he bought Howard’s Camaro, but declined to give his name in the report. He told CBS 8 that on March 22, he answered a Craigslist ad for a 1967 Camaro for sale for $14,000. He called the poster and set up a time to see the car. Those who spoke to the victim said she was helping her father, who was battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. When the victim arrived at Howard’s home the next day, she could see the photos taken on Craigslist. The victim said Howard was in the garage wearing a mask and did not want to disturb her because the man in the Craigslist ad told her her father had just gone through chemotherapy. He asked the man for the title and saw Howard give it to him.
“I checked the VIN to make sure it matched the car,” the victim said. The man said he saved many of the parts that came with the car.
The victim continued, “I called a tow truck to pick up the Camaro because it said it didn’t have brakes. We still didn’t realize anything was out of the ordinary. We chatted with Mr. Howard while we were waiting for the tow truck. The truck was about 20 It took minutes. He told us how he was fighting cancer and that’s when I felt bad and we both realized what was going on.
“Until the tow truck actually comes in, I said — I’m not going to move the car until I get the money and then everything comes out,” Howard said.

Howard drove his 1967 Camaro for many years. He said: This bike is completely customized, I designed and built it.
Howard said a guy knocked on his door in February and asked if he could buy it. Howard wasn’t interested, but they both got out of the car and looked at the car. After a long conversation about the car, the guy made Howard a good offer and Howard agreed. “I’ve had some health issues and the car can’t be driven, so you know I’ll be fine if it goes to a good home,” she said. This guy seems to be an avid car driver and looks it. A very good person
Three weeks ago, the man called Howard again. He told her to get an appraiser to look at the car so she could get a loan. When the man arrived at Howard’s house, he said he had brought his grown son. The man asked the Howards to stay at Howard’s garage so he could make a deal.
When the “appraiser” arrived at Howard’s house, the man held him down the hallway. Their only interaction was when the “appraiser” came to the car to look under the hood and Howard turned the car on for them.

Howard said that after he started talking to the victim, he asked him, “Will the car go down the line with these brakes, I said, the brakes were great?” These are Corvette brakes. Talk to the local police and they said they are looking for two men in the photos taken by the victim and his son who they believe were trying to sell them the Camaro. They believe that they will have more victims and believe that they are still trying to scam people.
“The two suspects lacked information and tricked the two victims without them realizing it. The ability to calmly talk to the victims shows they knew what they were doing,” said an SDPD lieutenant.

“Trust your gut,” said the lieutenant, “if the price is much lower than normal, then that’s definitely a red flag.
