We motivated the masses who were really impressed. Daniel and I both brought masks and were ready to monitor vehicles while social distancing.

It was a five hour drive to Vancouver so we landed the same day and spent the night. This way we can find vehicles the next day. I had already booked several appointments starting with a 2000 VW Rialta across the state line. I recently found out about Rialtas and have been a bit more interested in these compact engines. They are quite rare, so I couldn’t wait to find one for myself.
In the morning, Daniel and I drove to the Portland suburb of Clackamas to see the Rialta. When we arrived we found ourselves in some kind of RV storage. The lot was surrounded by a chain-link fence, where various state-of-repair motor homes and other vehicles were parked. The salesman was running late so another employee let us in.
The Rialta was truly everything we hoped it would be. Daniel and I excitedly wandered inside, looking at the closets and playing with the furniture. We have found a link to a detailed service history and all original manuals for the car. It appeared to be in perfect condition. We were excited.
But then things started to get a little weird. When we opened it, the engine wouldn’t start. After several attempts, it turned out that the platform was dead from the door nail. Our host apologized and reassured us that another employee had a habit of leaving keys in the fire. Apparently, the vehicles had to be moved around the lot from time to time, and sometimes the keys were left behind. It was a little strange, but it seemed reasonable. So we pulled into a nearby truck and tried to start the Rialta.

After several failed attempts, we discovered another red flag – the vehicle was completely worn out. We also noticed that the oil bucket was missing. Daniel and I looked at each other with great concern. What place was it?
The salesman finally arrived 50 minutes after the agreed meeting time. It didn’t look like I imagined it at all. He was a young man—maybe in his twenties—with a nice car and an expensive watch. He didn’t seem to like fun vehicles, but what did I know? This guy also knew the Rialta and walked us through all the engine systems and functions.
The salesman brought gasoline and filled the tank. This time the car started immediately after we stopped. He took the oil cap from another vehicle on the bridge and soon we were ready to test drive it.
At 21.6 meters long, the Rialta is very easy to drive. Daniel and I drove it on streets and highways for about 20 minutes. The car drove very well, everything was visible. We were in love.

Despite the red flags, Daniel and I decided to open the sale. We planned to pay in cash…but there was a problem. We arrived in Vancouver in such a hurry that we didn’t think to take any money with us. It was Saturday afternoon and all the banks were simply closed. To make matters worse, our bank has no branches in the Portland/Vancouver area. The nearest branch was in Olympia, so we went there the next day. When we arrived in Olympia, we found a hotel that was conveniently located near our bank. Bright and early Monday morning we went to the bank and finally got the money we needed to bring the Rialta home.
After visiting the bank, Daniel and I drove the two hours back to Clackamas. The salesman was waiting for us and showed us to a temporary office in a converted shed. We handed over the coins, which he carefully counted and then took out the name.
I found something strange here. The previous owner (Walt) was still listed as the owner of the Rialta. Walt and his wife owned the vehicle together and later relinquished their interest in it. The man we bought it from never registered the vehicle in his name even though the title was on the back of his name as the buyer.

I didn’t know enough about how titles work to know if this would be a problem. So we decided to go ahead and hope for the best. The seller presented a bill of sale and promised to be ready to help if there were any problems with the transfer of title. And that’s it.
As we drove through the Rialta, I began to worry that we had made a big mistake. There is something wrong with the whole situation. At first, the paper looked a little blurry. How were we supposed to buy a car without our names on the title? Also, I wondered about the garage door opener that was still inside. Why was he still there? We also belatedly noticed that the black water tank (sewage) was half full. It wasn’t the end of the world, but it wasn’t particularly pleasant either.
The next day I called the Washington State Licensing Department. I explained the situation and learned that we had indeed lost a key piece of paper. We had to get a bill of sale from Walt (the original owner) to the guy we bought from (known as the “interim owner”). This proves the chain of ownership and proves that nothing mysterious happened. I had a feeling that this paper would be difficult, if not impossible.
The licensing representative explained that there were other options, but they would require additional work and contact with the original owner.
