Before Amtrak’s founding in 1971, there were three competing San Francisco-bound trains operating between Chicago and the East Bay:
Railpax (renamed Amtrak in late April 1971) originally planned to rebuild the California Zephyr as part of its original network with Burlington Northern (formerly CB&Q) east of Dver, DRG&W between Dver and Ogd, Utah, and WP west of Ogd. The California Zephyr Route would serve more densely populated areas (including Doorway and Salt Lake City) than the Overland Route and pass through rural communities without good roads and is capable of attracting passengers on its regular routes.
However, because WP was abandoning its last loss-making passenger service with the abandonment of the California Zephyr, it was not eligible to participate in the creation of Amtrak. On April 12, 1971, WP refused to work with Railpax and they chose the SP route between Ogd and Oakland.

On April 26, the D&RGW voted not to join Amtrak. The contract stated that Amtrak could add the service later, which the D&RGW feared would overwhelm its single-track line that competes with the double-track UP. The D&RGW decided to use the Dver-Ogd Rio Grande Zephyr. Amtrak developed the UP Dver-Cheyne-Ogd route.

From 1971 to 1972, summer commuters traveling between Chicago and Oakland had to travel on two different trains: the Dover Zephyr, which ran daily between Chicago and Dover, and the City of San Francisco, which ran three times daily. a week between Dover and San Francisco Bay. But finally, after several false starts, Amtrak combined the two trains into one train called the San Francisco Zephyr, a tribute to the California Zephyr and the San Francisco Chief between Chicago and Oakland. Rio Grande continued to operate the Rio Grande Zephyr between Dver and Ogd.
In 1983, due to increasing losses in passenger activity, the D&RGW decided to merge with Amtrak. Amtrak operated the San Francisco Zephyr over the D&RGW’s Moffat Division between Dver and Salt Lake City, original in 1971. The switch was scheduled for April 25, but a mudslide in Thistle, Utah, closed the route and delayed the switch until to July 16th. After the recall, Amtrak renamed the train the California Zephyr.
Amtrak’s California Zephyr Train Route Offers Views Of The Rockies And Sierra Mountains Like You’ve Never Seen Before
The modern California marshmallow follows the same path as the one east of Winnemucca, Nevada. The train uses San Francisco’s first suburban line, along the Overland Route (the first railroad line), between Elko, Nevada and Sacramento. Two railroads were connected throughout central Nevada to provide road service. Therefore, the exact location where the train changes tracks depends on where it is traveling.
For much of the 1980s and 1990s, California Zephyr operated alongside Seattle-based Pioneer and Los Angeles-based Desert Wind. Since 1980, Pioneer and Desert Wind have exchanged buses with the San Francisco Zephyr in Ogd. The interchange was moved to Salt Lake City, where the latter train became the California Zephyr.
This created a massive 16-car Superliner train from Chicago to Utah, as it was the longest Amtrak train to operate outside of the Auto Train. Amtrak needed at least four EMD F40PH locomotives to bring this behemoth to the forefront of the Moffat Division. To ease the burden, Amtrak began separating the Pioneer from the Zephyr and the Desert Wind Door in 1991, with the Desert Wind continuing to be separated from the Zephyr at Salt Lake City.
The west side of the train was routed to Emeryville station when the Oakland Ctral station closed in 1994. On August 5, the 1995 California Zephyr was extended to Oakland. On May 12, Jack London Square station opened. But it was a difficult back and forth through the streets to get to Wye West Oakland. On October 26, 1997, the train was reorganized in Emeryville.

The westbound train is Amtrak #5 (eastbound #6). After departing from Union Station in Chicago, the train travels on the Metra BNSF rail line and makes a stop in Naperville, Illinois.
After passing through Aurora, Illinois, the train travels through the Illinois canyons and crosses the Mississippi River in Burlington, Iowa, over the Burlington Railroad Bridge. After passing through southern Iowa, the Zephyr reaches the Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. From Omaha, the train travels overnight through southern Nebraska and northeastern Colorado, arriving in Dover in the morning.
At the entrance, the Zephyr switches from BNSF to Union Pacific tracks. A westbound train will be diverted to the Central Corridor for a trip through the Tunnel District. The route crosses the Divide through the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel under James Peak. After exiting the Moffat Tunnel, the trails follow the Colorado River from Winter Park Resort to Ruby Canyon, west of Grand Junction.
