Physical Therapy West Des Moines – On the second floor – a palace of glass and brick on Des Moines’ west side – good is happening.
“The first thing you notice about physical therapy at Rock Valley is (the atmosphere),” said Dana Herrick, a dedicated and caring PT, world-class runner, and first-time mom to be (February 2021).

An incredible variety, Herrick, in her second tour of duty with Rock Valley, left to run professionally for the Brooks Group, arguably the best running shoe in all of road racing.

“It’s also extremely important to take care of patients who are surrounded by great people with great passion,” added Herrick, who sings the praises of West PT Beth Schweizer, a longtime colleague and mentor who Monday Sun and Himmel in sent in November. Des Moines Dave Clinic Manager Freesman, the rest of the West Des Moines staff and an amazing RVPT patient named Dean Furness.
A 13-year veteran of Rock Valley, Schweitzer has spent two decades improving the lives of others. A true change-maker, Schweitzer deflects the praise of those around her and scoffs at personal recognition. Passionate about her role, Schweitzer has gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of many. Frisman is passionate and big-hearted, forever dedicated to his craft. An accomplished athlete, Frisman also strongly understands the virtues of a beautiful pond.
“Let’s start by saying that Beth was the first person who took the time to mentor me in my career,” Herrick said. “She did that on many fronts, including women’s health.” It is a permanent part of women’s health, physical therapy or pelvic floor physical therapy. She invests a lot of time in me not only as a therapist, but also as a runner. Now that I’ve switched to major in Women’s Health, she continues to be an amazing mentor. Her passion never diminishes.”
In 2011, Furness, a father of three and a former middle school football player in Pella, Iowa, was paralyzed when a 1,000-pound hay bale collapsed on top of him after the tractor he was using gave up. The impact severed Wells Fargo’s spinal analysis consultant, leaving him unable to generate motor function in his lower half even after surgery.

A true treasure in life, Furness refused to slow down, citing too many good things about himself to feel sorry for himself.
Since the accident, Furness has competed – at an almost elite level – in seven marathons and 10 half marathons as a wheelchair athlete. He continues to coach high school girls basketball and spent several years as a high school football coach. He is the Martensdale-St. Also serves on the Board of Directors. Mary’s School District in Martensdale, Iowa.
“Let’s go back to Dave (Friesman), who has been putting me back together since 2003,” said Furness, a laugh-a-minute guy with a great memory and a keen sense of the world around him. “We’ve been friends for so long. We skated together at Breckenridge (August), and when I hurt my leg (right) and tore up my knee (left), Dave put me back together after the surgeries. He’s great , a friend I always loved being around. We always joked with him that when he met a girl he would ask two questions, the third question was always “do you have a pool”.
After being released from a Colorado rehab facility in early 2012, Furness worried about life without pain medication and how to develop and maintain strength in his abdominal area. He turned to Schevizer.

“I wanted to know what was pain and what wasn’t,” he said. “I didn’t need (painkillers) to mask the pain and what wasn’t.” It was hard to deal with, but it had to be done. Trust in it and it can swallow you. Work on strengthening the abdominal region just below the rib cage. Two keys are created.
Herrick says the patients and the therapists — Schweizer and Furness — refused to give up on the challenges before them. Together they helped Furness reach heights he knew – athletically – were within his grasp but had yet to find after his accident.
“When I was here in 2015 and 2016, I knew their great work with Beth and Dean,” Herrick said. “He was determined and she would help him be better and be what he wanted to be.” Of course there were challenges, but that didn’t stop her.
“Fast forward two years and I was scheduled to run the Chicago Marathon in the professional women’s field,” Herrick added. “Suddenly I see this face I recognize in the wheelchair. I just left a meeting of a professional women’s group, the Wheel Riders were supposed to meet. And there was Dean. We had a big chat in the hotel lobby. I had no idea that he had made it this far to be on the starting line of a field of professional marathon runners. I learned from Beth that after all that Dean had accomplished early in his racing career, it was his first (professional) season and was a bit nervous. It touched me on a personal level knowing how hard he worked and how much Beth did with him. It’s a great experience.”

Furness has a good laugh when he talks about Schweitzer and her relationship between therapist and patient… He calls her the leader of his team and jokes about other names for her and Frisman, but that discussion is for another time.
“You can learn a lot in this world by looking at the ground,” Furness said. “By that I mean when I’m at the table and I look down and Beth is in her running shoes — something to keep her grounded — I know I’ll be on ‘that’ day.” If she has Chuck Taylor, she has other plans, but nothing like a “running shoe” date. Anyway, I know I’ll get a job, but I’m getting better. Beth is really my team leader. She is there for me every step of the way and knows what I need to keep me going.
“Most of all, Dean is an amazing person,” she said. “A wonderful sense of humor, driven and a good guy. He’s passionate about everything he does and cares deeply about the people around him. I work with Dave (Friesman) and Dean.” “I appreciated their give and take as I watched them do it. However, the goal was and remains the same. The mission is better than Dean and there are every step of the way. Every patient that we have is like this”.
“It helps to be married to a prosthetist,” said Schweitzer of her husband, Todd, for OSSUR, the world’s largest manufacturer of non-invasive orthopedic equipment, including braces and support products, compression therapy and prosthetics, for people with prosthetic limbs.

“It’s an area that comes out of PT school that I obviously lacked,” Schweitzer said. “I’m not ready to deal with pregnant women and amputees.” I felt like I didn’t have enough practice on both sides. Thank God for the opportunity to develop in those areas, especially with RockValley.
Herrick says Schweitzer understood the greater need for someone to work with those struggling after an amputation.
“That’s just the way she is,” Herrick said. “If someone has been active before and is motivated after going through something like this, Beth can really make a difference.” As a PT, she has many opportunities to speak at conferences educating prosthetists about the importance of PT for amputees. I know she has traveled the world to speak and share. She really built this specialty.”
For Furness, the last few months of 2020 have been slow. The pandemic disrupted his racing schedule. He says he is reaching out to Schweitzer to prepare him for his next challenge.

“Working on the elbow, doing everything we can to get faster,” Furness said. “No matter what, I know I have someone in Beth to help me. It’s always like that.”
