DALE CITY, VA – Three people are dead after a four-vehicle crash on the I-95 Expressway Thursday afternoon. According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened when the sedan went the wrong way in the Express Lanes after a police chase.

The occupants of the sedan, Stephanie Morton and Tia Porter of Richmond, died in the crash. Kenneth Crosby, who was driving his Ford Ranger, was killed in a head-on collision when Morton and Porter’s sedan collided with him.

4:30 p.m. Thursday, a Virginia state trooper attempted to stop a 2008 Dodge Avenger traveling northbound on I-95 in Spotsylvania County. Officials said the Avenger was traveling 80 miles per hour and the speed limit was 65. Police identified Morton as the driver and Porter as the passenger.

According to state police, the Dodge refused to stop for police and the body began a chase. Two minutes later, troopers called off the pursuit due to heavy traffic on I-95. Dodge Avenger accelerates using the left shoulder of the highway.

When troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver of the Dodge Avenger exited I-95 onto the southbound express lane. The car went through three lighted gates at the entrance to the Express Lanes. Troopers did not follow the vehicle on the express lanes.

At milepost 155, near Dale City, a Dodge Avenger hit a southbound Ford Ranger pickup truck, officials said. The crash forced Kenneth Crosby’s truck off the highway and through a fence.

The Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Atlas also collided with the Dodge Avenger. The Avenger then caught fire.
