Pagliai’s was officially opened in 1957 by the son of immigrants from northern Italy. According to the site’s history section, the Pagliai family first shared their fruit shortly after arriving in Zoo Spur, Iowa, an early mining town on the border between Polk and Dallas.
The original restaurant was a bar in Ames, but as the food grew in popularity, it gained restaurant status. The family was able to expand to Grinnell in the mid-1960s.
“It was amazing when I first visited in the 1960s and it’s still amazing today,” Karen Wallace told us on Facebook.
