Deliu’s son said his computer science teacher placed two “gay pride” (rainbow) flags in his classroom on Sept. 16, then used a search engine to search websites related to gay life and “reach students,” according to the lawsuit. in the class.”

Deliu stated that his family was Orthodox Christian and viewed homosexuality as a sin, and said in his petition that this was “not consistent with their Bible.”

On September 21, Deliu went to Emerald Cove Elementary School and asked the teacher to temporarily remove her son from the classroom. School officials said they were investigating whether they could transfer him to another computer science class, according to the lawsuit.

“The school failed to comply with its contract and instead unilaterally and without notice enrolled Dr. Deliu son in art classes,” the lawsuit said.

When Deliu objected, he was told on Sept. 26 that the matter had been referred to the school’s Office of Professional Standards for administrative investigation.

“The appeal is complex and the continued delay will not benefit his career and education but rather harm the education of Dr. Deliu’s son, who missed almost 4 weeks of computer science education and had to attend art classes,” the plaintiff said in the Voice.

Deliu argued that the teacher’s actions violated Florida’s adopted “bill of parental rights,” which will go into effect in 2021.

The law gives parents “the right to direct the education and care of their minor children” and “the right to direct the upbringing and moral or religious education of their minor children.”

“Dr. Deliu wants to teach his children about the gay lifestyle at home, not in public schools.”

Deliu’s lawsuit alleges that Emerald Cove High School attempted to “shape her child’s mind without her consent,” adding that “there is no legal framework that permits teachers, principals, schools, districts, and/or committees to teach, discuss, or otherwise educate.” There is no authority” Dr. Educate students, including Deliu’s son, on gay pride, homosexuality, or similar topics, but specifically not in computer science classes.”

Deliu is seeking a jury trial and is asking the court to declare the teacher’s decision to discuss gay pride and homosexuality illegal, order the teacher to permanently lower the flag, and order the school district and school board to “continue and cease investigating his complaint.”

Finally, Deliu is asking teachers and principals to issue a public written apology and post it on the Palm Beach County School District website.

“The school district does not generally comment on pending litigation, but we are hopeful that the facts of this case will emerge through the process.”

The Palm Beach County School District said the district does not have a policy for displaying flags in the classroom.

“I think it’s inappropriate because I’m not sending my kids to this school to be educated about homosexuality and gay pride,” Deliu told education reporter Stephanie Susskind on Wednesday. said. “I think we sent kids to school to learn how to read, write, and do arithmetic.”

That was Deliu’s reaction when her son came home from Emerald Cove Elementary School and told her his computer science teacher had hung an LGBTQ pride flag in the classroom, then answered students’ questions about what it meant.

“This is our religion. We are Orthodox Christians. Our religion teaches us that this is a sin,” Deliu said. “This doesn’t mean we judge individuals or have a problem with it. Personally, I’m a libertarian and I think everyone should live and let live.”

“The problem is twofold,” Deliu said. “I’m saying what happened was wrong. But the steps they took seem specific, if not outright misunderstandings.”

While he doesn’t mention flags, he does mention safe space posters and stickers and says “teachers shouldn’t let parents’ fears stop them from publicly supporting LGBTQ+.”

“I think we’re determined that it’s going to happen eventually,” said Julie Seaver, executive director of Compass Community Center.

Seaver said the school district has long been inclusive of LGBTQ students and he doesn’t see that changing.

“I don’t agree with schools that have anything to do with religious beliefs,” Deliu said. Bold, political or social.

Deliu wants to settle her case after she said she learned another of her son’s teachers had hung an LGBTQ pride flag. He also removed his son from that class.
