The owner of the CityCenter casino complex opened its first hotel on Tuesday, unveiling the first 1,500 rooms available at the $8.5 billion development, which it hopes will be a catalyst for tourism growth in Las Vegas after two years of decline.
“I promise next year will be better than this year,” said Jim Murren, CEO of MGM Mirage.
Eco Friendly Hotel & Environmental Commitment
Murren said at a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Vdara Hotel & Spa that after five years of CityCenter development, it’s time to celebrate what more than 10,000 developers have built and 12,000 employees manage.
CityCenter is owned by MGM Mirage in Las Vegas and Dubai World, an investment arm of the Gulf state.
Most of the 67-acre project on the Las Vegas Strip will open in phases this month. Crystals Mall and the 392-room Mandarin Oriental opened this week, and the Aria Resort and Casino opened Dec. 16, adding 4,004 hotel rooms to the crowded Las Vegas market. Two condominium towers are scheduled to open in January, while construction on a 400-room boutique hotel has been delayed until at least late next year.
Competitors worry that the extra rooms could drive down prices further in a market where many hotel-casinos are forced to cut prices to fill beds.

Vdara is a 57-story non-gaming, non-smoking condominium hotel connected to other CityCenter properties and the beautiful Bellagio Hotel next door. Its features include a large Nancy Rubins starburst statue in a canoe near the entrance, as well as a boutique spa and an indoor salon with 11 treatment rooms.
Murren acknowledged board member and billionaire investor Kirk Kerkarian, who was not at the meeting. Muren said the ability of Kerkarian and others to present a project larger than what Las Vegas had was what made CityCenter possible.
Kerkorian, 92, has longstanding ties to Las Vegas and has built two of the city’s largest hotels, but he said in a statement that CityCenter may be the best project he’s ever been involved with.
“Of all the great properties in Las Vegas that I’ve been involved with, CityCenter is the most amazing,” said Kerkarian, who owns 37 percent of MGM. “I’m excited to see the public’s reaction and look forward to seeing how this changes Las Vegas.”
