Palm Beach State Police Academy – With social changes and increased pressure from the police, recruitment is more difficult than ever. We spoke with two current members of the Palm Beach Gardens Police Officer Internship Program to find out why policing remains their chosen career field. Meet Nikolay Badulati (above, left) and Joseph Strzelicki (above, right).

Nikolai Badolati’s journey to police work followed a traditional path. He is the third generation of his family to continue in the profession and spent five years in the Garden Police Search Program. “My father is a police officer, my grandfather is also a police officer and it’s a family tradition,” he said.

From an early age, Nicholas was interested in career fields and participated in trips and various community services through the Explorer Program. That’s when he said he fell in love with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department. A few years later, he completed a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Participating in an internship program is the last step before enrolling in college and achieving your goals.

When asked why he wanted to be a police officer in today’s climate, Nicholas said, “There are good police officers out there and we’re in a great community!”

Recruiter Joseph Strzlicki shares Nicholas’ commitment to law enforcement, but his journey into the intern program began differently. Joseph’s early career took him to major league baseball. After being drafted in 2018, he played for the Miami Marlins for two years before getting injured. After rotator cuff surgery, he was unable to return to baseball but always had a “Plan B” in mind.

He grew up fishing in his backyard, he recalls, as his neighbor was a police officer. Over the years this officer’s enthusiastic guidance sparked Joseph’s interest in the career field. Even thanks to his promising baseball prospects, he still earned a degree in criminal justice.

When asked if the national climate surrounding policing made him reluctant to continue training, Joseph said it had the opposite effect.

“It makes me want to do more! The brotherhood in police work is like baseball. I want to be a part of something bigger than myself,” he said.

The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department offers two types of police officer jobs: Police Instructor (non-sworn) and Police Officer (sworn). When jobs become open, job postings are posted on city websites, local colleges, and major job boards such as GJobs and CareerBuilder.

Officers certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) are eligible to register as full-time officers. Applicants certified by other states may also apply, but must complete a Florida state law enforcement officer equivalency course to become certified in Florida. Earlier this year, Florida’s governor signed a recruitment law to attract high-quality law enforcement officers from other states, including grants of up to $1,000 for training costs and stipends of up to $5,000. Applicants seeking sponsorship who are interested in becoming a certified police officer at the Florida Keys Police Recruit Academy, a police officer may do so by applying for an internship. Funding through the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department covers tuition, books, uniforms, state exam fees and 75% of a police officer’s starting salary.

Over the years, the police officer internship program has been a huge success because some sponsors applicants who have previously participated in the agency’s police internship program. The Palm Beach Gardens Police Explorer Program is designed for individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 who are interested in a future career in law enforcement. Many of the department’s inspectors became police officers, rising to the ranks of sergeant, captain, and even major.

Congratulations to the women officers who participated in and successfully completed the 3-day professional training program to bridge the gap in the ranks of women enforcement officers. These three days were physically and mentally very demanding and all the officers actively participated in these three days.

Great class, I learned a lot before trying this, great demo. All the instructors were great and every technique was perfect. Very kind and attentive to every student. After taking this course, I can feel my confidence increasing. I would recommend this course to any law enforcement officer. The techniques we learned were really effective, I had a problem with the techniques the class was teaching. Best defense class I have ever taken or attended as a female officer! This class/course is required. I can’t say enough about this class. I feel confident and confident in my abilities. Really enjoyed this class! Excellent class. This three-day course is designed to handle violent cases involving serious suspects. When trying to control larger suspects, the difference in size and strength requires fighting strategies that rely on more than just upper body strength. These concepts and techniques can be used by any officer who approaches a major suspect. The days were busy and mentally demanding. Officers in training wear vests, gun belts and pants because nothing else makes sense.

On September 24, you will graduate from the eight-week Firefighter Candidate School at the South Carolina Fire Academy in Columbia. Firefighters went through a 320-hour curriculum and firefighting skills development program.
