Iowa Orthopedic Des Moines Iowa – Dr. Jeffrey Farber is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, specializing in the treatment of pediatric musculoskeletal disorders. A native of Windsor Heights, Iowa, he graduated from Valley High School in 1976 with fellow Iowa Ortho Dr. Timothy Kenney. Dr. Farber has practiced medicine in Des Moines for over 30 years.
Dr. Farber is trained and has extensive experience treating children who are still growing. Children’s bodies react differently to injuries, infections and disorders than adults’. He offers a full range of pediatric orthopedic care and believes there is no greater calling than being in the business of helping others. “There are few things in life as satisfying as making a sick child well – it’s the most rewarding aspect of my career,” he says.

Dr. Farber entered medicine because she finds it to be a wonderful combination of science and interacting with people from all walks of life, two things she truly enjoys. In his free time, Dr. Farber likes to be active by riding his bike. When he was 10, Dr. Farber got his first 10-speed bicycle. Since then, cycling has been his passion. Bike to work 2-3 days a week year round. He encourages his pediatric patients to find physical activities that interest them to stay fit, as he did with cycling. Dr. Farber is also very interested in learning new languages, such as Spanish and Arabic. Scott Meyer is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgeries of the knee, shoulder and elbow, including joint replacement. A native of Counsel Bluffs, Iowa, he began his career at Iowa Ortho in 1992.

Dr. Meyer’s goal is to help patients return to activity as quickly and safely as possible. He is the chief orthopedic surgeon at Drake University as well as the orthopedic staff of the Iowa Cubs. He served in both these roles for 24 years. Dr. Meyer also provides ancillary medical coverage for the Iowa Wild as well as on-field coverage for many local sporting events and teams.
In particular, Dr. Meyer was one of the first orthopedic surgeons in Iowa to perform cartilage repair surgery. The procedure involves implanting the patient’s cartilage cells to repair the joint surfaces of the knee. In addition to practicing at Iowa Ortho, he has written book chapters, published research articles related to sports medicine, presented his research at national medical meetings, and donated his expertise to the people of Tanzania during a medical mission trip.
Growing up, science taught Dr. the mayor loved it. The opportunity to help people led him to focus on medicine and his interest in sports and sports injuries led him to orthopedics.
In his free time, he can be found on the golf course, running or cheering on his favorite sports teams. He has been married to his wife Ruth for 30 years and has 4 grown children. Patrick Sullivan, MD, and his son Jason Sullivan, MD are two orthopedic surgeons here. In this joint effort episode, the father-son duo talk about their upbringing, family life, education and even share some funny stories. Dr. Jason Sullivan explains, “Growing up, you never said, ‘Hey, you have to do orthopedics.’ It is very interesting that you choose freely and rejoice as I was; I am happy and proud of you. I think everyone has. To find the way to what they want to do.
During their time there were instances where they were able to combine their skills and work together. Working together allowed them both to learn from their surgical experiences and knowledge. “It was a lot of fun for me,” said Dr. Jason Sullivan. They both enjoy their time working together and hope to do more cases together in the future.

As for the next generation of Sullivan, is orthopedics up for grabs? Dr. Jason asked Dr. Patrick if he would encourage one of his children to pursue orthopedics. “That’s what I tell them to do. Find out what you’re good at. Try lots of things; see where your natural interests, skills, and intelligence lie. Then find a career in the field that suits you. It allows you to be independent and self-driven, so that you have more control over the world and enjoy what you do.”
