Delta Hits Back At United’s Cape Town Plans
A codeshare agreement means that cooperating airlines can sell seats on each other’s flights. This means you can travel to more destinations than your chosen airline would normally offer. Codeshare flights are also good because convenient connections can be made with connecting flights of the same airline. The downside of choosing a codeshare flight may be that you may not be able to upgrade codeshare flights or take advantage of elite benefits in some cases.
A connecting flight or transfer means that you reach your destination with two or more flights, i.e. a direct flight. After the first flight, they transfer to a new plane and may even transfer to another airport terminal. The time required to move passengers and baggage between flights is called the Minimum Connecting Time (MCT) and is always taken into account here.
If you bought the entire flight with one ticket, the airline will book you for the next connection.
On connecting flights, checked baggage is usually routed to your destination if you purchase a single ticket for both flights.
Delta Air Lines Introduces Triangular Route For South Africa
If you miss your connecting flight due to circumstances beyond your control (such as the delay of the first flight), you must contact the airline to offer a seat on the next flight. This is usually free and is only valid if you have purchased the journey as a single ticket. If the next flight is the next day, the airline usually provides accommodation and meals.
A codeshare agreement is an agreement between two or more airlines to “share” the same flight. In other words, you can buy a ticket from one airline for a flight operated by another partner airline. It may have taken more than two years, but Delta is finally ready to launch its triangle route to South Africa.
Us Giant Delta Airlines Ramps Up Direct Flights To Sa
The Atlanta-based airline announced over the weekend that it will launch flights from Atlanta to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The route will be served four times a week starting Dec. 2, airline spokesman Drake Castaneda confirmed to TPG after first seeing it on Cirium’s schedule.
Delta will deploy its flagship Airbus A350 on the route, featuring 32 private Delta One suites, 48 Premium Select seats, 36 Comfort+ leg room seats and 190 standard economy seats.
Before the epidemic, the airline flew daily non-stop between Atlanta and Johannesburg with a Boeing 777-200.
Direct (non Stop) Flights From Atlanta To Johannesburg
Just weeks after the pandemic disrupted the travel industry, Delta decided to retire its 777 fleet in May 2020. The airline also suspended its flights to South Africa due to the border closure.
With the easing of travel restrictions, Delta has decided to begin serving South Africa, but with a new strategy driven by aircraft performance.
The problem was that there was no room for the A350 to serve the Johannesburg to Atlanta leg.
Municipal O.R. Tambo International Airport is located at an altitude of 5,558 meters above sea level, more than a mile above sea level. This high altitude degrades the aircraft’s takeoff performance, meaning the aircraft cannot take off with as much fuel or payload as at sea level.
Delta Airlines Adds Route To Johannesburg And Cape Town, South Africa: Travel Weekly
From Johannesburg, you take a short flight to Cape Town and on to the huge center of Atlanta from the coastal Cape Town International Airport, which is only 151 feet above sea level.
The airline will also begin serving Cape Town, a popular holiday destination for American tourists. Passengers traveling to Johannesburg or Cape Town can enjoy non-stop flights in one direction and a short refueling stop in the other direction. (The airline planned to operate the short flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town as a so-called eighth freedom route, meaning that domestic flights would not be able to operate Delta’s flight between the two largest cities in South Africa.)
While the plan looked good on paper, Delta faced serious headwinds on the proposed route. In addition to several delays due to the recovery of COVID cases and travel restrictions, the carrier was unable to obtain permission from the South African government to operate the triangle route.
Earlier this year, Delta was finally granted permission. However, the service did not start immediately. Instead, Delta sought permission from the US Department of Transportation to operate a direct flight from Atlanta to Cape Town without refueling in Johannesburg.
Delta Launching Atlanta To Cape Town Route In December 2022
The United States and South Africa do not have an “open skies” agreement, and flight frequency is regulated by local aviation authorities.
As the two airlines competed for the remaining four weekly flights under a bilateral aviation agreement with South Africa, things heated up until the DOT came back with a surprise in July: Delta got Delta and more seats. United departs Cape Town non-stop.
Delta Cape Town began continuous sales within days of receiving the permit. This flight departs on December 17 three times a week. The airline will deploy an Airbus A350 aircraft on the route, which will operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The triangle route now ends continuous service. During the four-day non-stop service, Delta provides a one-stop triangle service.
Delta Air Lines Will Try Cape Town Route Once Again
Together, the airline offers daily flights to Cape Town, the full timetable is at the bottom of this post.
The airline’s flights to Johannesburg will also operate daily. Delta flies three days a week non-stop from Atlanta to Johannesburg and back with an upgraded Airbus A350 with a maximum take-off weight of 280 tons.

Delta Flight From South Africa To Atlanta Diverted To Boston For
In recent days, two Delta Air Lines flights from South Africa to the United States had to make unscheduled landings to return to the United States. The first diversion occurred on November 28, when Delta Flight 201 from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Atlanta made a technical stop in Boston for refueling.
Another flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta, which departed on December 2, diverted to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where it also refueled before continuing. Delta said both layoffs were “planned in advance” and that new flight crews were needed to fly the final legs to Atlanta.
