I am a retired horse rider. I have been riding for over 50 years and have many bikes. I have several of them now. One of my hobbies is scouring Craigslist for bikes. I do this at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. I don’t know what I see. One day, a few weeks ago, I came across an old EX500 from 2009, owned by a retired old lady with only 3,000 km on the clock – but the bike scared her and she wanted to sell it. The price was reasonable, the bike was nearby, so I picked it up. I wasn’t looking for the EX500, I actually passed it a few times. Maybe it’s the color – I love this blue. But mostly I did some online research on them before purchasing them.

It looks like the EX500’s performance stats are almost identical to my first real bike. . . The 1970 Kawasaki Mach III H1 is a 3-cylinder, 2-stroke, 500cc motorcycle that was one of the best at the time. Both the EX500 and Mach III are advertised to run 1/4 mile in the lower 12 seconds with a top speed of around 120 mph. On my ride today I was wondering if you could port my stock 1969 EX500, it would fit well with any of the performance bikes of the era:

The EX500 and Mach III couldn’t be more different (despite the same 500cc displacement): high-tech 2-cylinder 4-stroke engine vs. Technologically advanced 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine. True measurement and game cycles. By the way, ergo and sports bike fairings are no longer fitted to rear and road bikes. And the tires were bad back then.
At 6,000 rpm in sixth gear, the EX500 reaches an indicated speed of 75 mph. EX500 redlines at 10,500 rpm
Mach III at 6000 rpm in 5th gear reads 80 mph. Mach III redlines at 9000 rpm

I guess that’s why I like my EX500 so much. It reminds me of a certain time in my life and how much the motorcycle has been a part of my life all these years.
Another similarity between the 2009 EX500 and the 1970 Mach III is weight. A wet EX500 weighs about 435 pounds and the Mach III weighs about 405 pounds. very close
I’m also a long time rider and have a soft spot for the ex500. I started riding small bikes in the early 1970s, then off-road bikes, and when I was 16, two sports bikes and a road bike. There was a fundamental connection to these simple machines that felt as amazing as today’s powerful motorcycles. He can’t compare to me. But the Ex500 brings that connection back, while offering enough performance for sports and a quite versatile bike to boot. It is also cheap to buy.
And so it remained… 750 Ducati. I had the opportunity to buy it for $1,200 (a lot of money back then), and it still kicked my butt to climb.

Great photo of R69, my only complete restoration. The year 1956… came to me like a rusty, forgotten POS. The owner died in 1960… the motorcycle stood untouched until 1975, the tank was rusty… it was immediately destroyed. This is Henrik’s large tank (10 gallon?), purchased new for $400… back then it was the large original.
In 1972 I was in the USAF in California and wanted to buy a new 1972 BMW R75/5. The dealer wanted about $1,800 for it, but I couldn’t afford it, so I bought a 1972 Yamaha XS650 new for about $1,300, which is a great bike. I put 34,000 miles on it before selling it two years later.
Coincidentally… my best friend’s black 1975 XS650 (was it a D model?) and my 1972 Triumph 500 Daytona, donated by us, great keeper. Cold gas toes with Amal’s “tickle”… but it works and feels great. Happy days… We both worked at a Yamaha dealer at the time.
The year 1972 was the XS2. Front disc reduction in the first year. Delayed but not caught. They are angry. 1975 will be the XS650B. Yamaha has gone completely crazy with naming their bikes. 1970 XS1, 1971 XS1B, 1972 XS2, 1973 TX650, 1974 TX650A (better frame introduced), 1975 XS650B and Alfa as K until its demise in 1983 (USA).

The trap… to get off Long Island we are forced to use 4 or 5 bridges or subway tunnels that cause regular, terrible destruction in New York. As a result, I really want to run on East Long Island. Some of the nicer and lesser-known roads around the Hamptons are my playground. At certain times of the year it is wasteful there.

Well, each field has its advantages and disadvantages. But I love the weather here, especially the really hot summer weather that many people find unbearable. Winter is our best season for horse riding. I’ve never taken a long boat trip – been there, done that. I currently ride 3-4 days a week, but rarely cover more than 50 km each time. The motorcycle became my hobby. I have all kinds. . . Except cruisers. I sold my last boat on Christmas Eve – a 2008 HD Fat Boy. I buy them (almost always used), keep them for a while, sell them, buy something else. I can keep the bike for about 8-10 years and sell it after 2 months. My wife thinks (you know!) I’m crazy.
By the way, I grew up in the Midwest and lived in New England (NY, Connecticut) for 13 years – I know winter.

I live in east central CT and cross the border into CT into the Poughkeepsie area of New York – the roads there are terrible, terrible. This is the longest section where I don’t have a motorcycle.

I would definitely love to have an early 70’s Ducati, a 50’s and 60’s Bimmer, and my first motorcycle…a ‘160 Honda CB160…again.
Each one stands the test of time…classics and collectors at this point. A completely different piece of property, incomparable to other technical models.
Common sense says… if we don’t have the ability to support them (some of us have huge resources a la je leno), we should keep the boat. I can’t keep them all…..though I’m sure we’ll love it! 🙂
