I mean, why do other people travel? There are many places to eat in Baton Rouge. We’ve narrowed it down to our 10 favorites that you must try.
Mason’s Grill is known for their Saturday and Sunday brunch, but also has weekly specials like Kids Eat Free Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Burger & Beer Flights on Wednesdays, and Wing Night Thursdays.
Enjoy their Cajun breakfast: eggs your way, and jalapeño-stuffed cake. It is served with creamy seafood, gratin sauce and shrimp and crab. Be sure to try the shrimp and prawn stew and the boudin boudin onion rings served with remoulade sauce.

If you need a little extra, you should walk to Louisiana Lagniappe (which literally means “a little extra”). They serve the best of Cajun and Creole seafood, such as fresh blackened shrimp with a rum-butter pineapple sauce, barbecue shrimp sautéed in a spicy New Orleans butter sauce, or fried catfish fried to perfection.
Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Cuisine is owned and operated by third-generation restaurateur Jim Urdiales, serving Mestizo cuisine that honors his Mexican and Cajun-French heritage. It is a great place for food and drinks with friends, or a casual meal with your family.
Try Cancun: shrimp and crab enchiladas, crab and spinach enchiladas, fresh guacamole salad, and crispy shrimp tacos! It can be dipped in queso, but I got mine without it. I want 5 more of these shrimp tacos! Really good!
Or try the pescado: roasted red, skin and sweet potato fries on a bed of brown rice, topped with shrimp and crab queso and a slice of avocado.

If you think this list is full of seafood, you’re right. I think you are in Cajun country! And Parrain’s serves the best seafood you’ll find anywhere.
They have shrimp, crabs, crabs, and catfish. They even have ‘gators for appetizers! When in Cajun country, eat like a Cajun.

Right in the heart of Baton Rouge, Cocha is a place like no other. They pride themselves on sourcing food locally, organically whenever possible, and make everything from scratch, every day.
Cocha makes you feel at home with great attention to detail and excellent customer service. And, they have a very cool bar to meet for a drink with friends.
Try the cachapa…a Venezuelan corn cake with a choice of slow roasted pork or jackfruit, cheese, crema, pickled shallots and spicy organic microgreens. It is gluten free and can be made vegan, vegetarian or dairy free.
Or, if you’re craving seafood, try the Peruvian Seafood Stew, Seafood Stew, Pan Fried Louisiana Gulf Shrimp, Fingerling Potatoes, Organic Charred Corn, Asparagus, Avocado, Seafood Soup and Aji Amario. This great dish is also gluten free.
Foods You Need To Try While You’re In Baton Rouge
Whatever you try at Cocha, you are sure to leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face.
For a reasonably priced meal, you can’t beat Sammy’s Highland Grill. Order freshly caught and cooked shrimp by the book, but be sure to check the timing. First stage Monday to Thursday at 16:00, and first stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday at noon.
We had fried alligator with jalapeño ranch dressing, Caesar salad, crab cakes and seafood gumbo (shrimp, crab and crab) for entrees.
For lunch, we ate shrimp and corn and potatoes on a large plate. Now I have to tell you, I love spicy food with lots of flavor, and this did not disappoint. The plate was full of flavor, and the corn and potatoes had a sharper punch!

And they have a lot more than that on the menu…burgers, sandwiches, poboys, pasta dishes, steaks, catfish, oysters, and a pretty decent kids menu.
We finished it off with white chocolate bread pudding for desert. Tough choice, as they also have Mississippi Mud Pie and Banana Foster Cheesecake on the desert menu.
For over 25 years, Chimes has served great food in a relaxed, family-friendly environment. They make everything from scratch, and have an extensive beer and liquor menu.
Appetizers include hushpuppies, shrimp fries, shrimp & grits, and pudding egg rolls. You can also find raw oysters at their raw bar.

I was in the mood for a drink, so after asking our lovely server Andrew for a recommendation, he suggested the Briar Rose: Ketel One Botanicals Grapefruit & Rose Vodka, and Fentimans Sparkling Rose Lemonade. It is both delicious and refreshing!
We ordered the pudding balls for appetizers: homemade minced pork and rice pudding balls, fried, served with a spicy dipping sauce.
If you are looking for good Creole cuisine, then Mansurs on the Boulevard is your place. They have been serving Creole in style since 1989, and have an extensive wine list sure to please connoisseurs. Enjoy a live pianist while you enjoy your meal.
For your main course, try the Grand Filet Mignon, East Coast Cold Water Lobster, Shrimp Vacherie, Creole Chicken Piccata or “The Dish That Made Us Famous” – Cedar Grilled Redfish. It’s grilled on a cedar plank and seasoned with creole lemon caper butter. Great!
