Many people look for jobs in big companies as it is a good place to build a stable career. Unfortunately, if we measure company size based on annual revenue, there may not be many options in the state you live in. Check out our new map to compare the size of the largest companies headquartered in each state.
The information posted on our map is based on a document provided by the independent statistical rating company S&P Capital IQ. Figures are from 2017, the latest year for which data is available. We adjusted the size of each state to reflect annual revenue—the bigger the state, the more money its corporations make. We then color-coded each for convenience and added annual income figures, creating a unique map of the US economy.
Walmart (headquartered in Arkansas) stands out for obvious reasons: the company’s annual revenue is $486 billion, more than double that of Texas-based ExxonMobil ($226 billion). Arkansas sits in the middle of the country, making Walmart more dominant than Nebraska’s Berkshire Hathaway ($224 billion) or California’s Apple ($216 billion). Sure, Walmart makes money through thousands of stores across the country, but because of its headquarters, all of its revenue is in Arkansas.
North American Life Insurance Review
There are some important routes on our map. The Northeast region has the most blue states, indicating that large companies do not generate more than $100 billion in annual revenue. Rhode Island actually tops the region because of CVS Health ($178 billion), surpassing even New York (Verizon, $126 billion) and Massachusetts (GE, $124 billion). There are also many companies in the Midwest. Some are very large and well-known corporations, such as GM in Michigan ($166 billion) and UnitedHealth Group in Minnesota ($185 billion), but other states have large companies approaching $100 billion, including Aegon in Iowa ($38 billion) and Johnson Controls in Wisconsin ($37 billion). Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that while large companies are often headquartered in one state, they are not necessarily in neighboring countries. Consider, for example, the number of other $100 billion companies in California and Texas.
Elsewhere, the Southeast did not disappoint as no company headquartered east of the Mississippi exceeded $100 billion. For example, consider how small Mississippi is compared to Arkansas. When a chicken company (Sanderson Farms) becomes the state’s largest employer by revenue ($3 billion), it speaks volumes for the region’s economy. The Southwest and Northwest regions have the largest companies outside of Texas, California, and Washington (home of Amazon, valued at $136 billion).
Let’s go back and list the top ten countries based on the revenue of their largest companies.
Of course, there are many states that don’t have very large companies, while California and Texas do have some companies that generate billions of dollars in annual revenue. Of course, it should be said that revenue is a different metric than profit, which is a good indicator of a company’s strength. However, revenue statistics provide a good way to compare companies across different industries and regions of the country. So, if climbing the corporate ladder at a big company is your idea of a great career, we recommend moving to the state where the $100 billion company is headquartered as soon as possible.
