For 16 years, Eleanor and Ray Houlette have lived in their mobile home in the Cactus Ridge community near South Point. And now they are getting ready to go.

“There was nowhere we could go that could compare. You can’t get a one-bedroom house and we had three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and we fixed it up and put a lot of stuff into it,” Eleanor said.
Currently, there are approximately 117 homeowners living in the community. The owners of Cactus Ridge are rezoning the area to change land use to allow for multi-family housing and community development.
“Because of its location at Las Vegas Boulevard and Cactus, south Las Vegas Boulevard is one of the most explosive areas for future growth,” said Rob Gronauer, attorney for the property owners.
Gronauer said they followed state law and overstepped the bounds by giving school owners a year’s notice when state law only requires six months.

“We’re working with tenants right now and some of them have already moved out,” Gronauer said.
“I think they treat us like we’re going to be taken away because we’re old and we still have a lot to give,” said Eleanor.
Homeowners received notices in February. Gronauer said the rezoning should take about six months and hopes to be done with the process by the end of the year.
Gronauer also said that they meet with landlords every day to help them get to other places they want to move.
