Lexington has no shortage of banks, but one type of financial institution is absent from the city: the credit union.

DuPont Community Credit Union, or DCCU, will open its “Lexington Member Center” on Thursday. The building — located on Route 11 north of I-64 — will house the credit union’s 12th branch in Waynesboro.

Nick Martino, Lexington “member area” branch manager, said the credit union decided to open a branch here after receiving positive feedback from area members.

“We ask for feedback from our members through surveys, and we’ve done several surveys with numbers asking branches in Rockbridge County,” Martino said. “We decided after a lot of feedback from members that this is a market where we want to set up a branch.”

In addition to market leaders BB&T, Cornerstone Bank and Wells Fargo, six other banks have a presence here. The only other nearby credit union, Big Island Federal Credit Union 1013, is located in Buena Vista.

Nancy Yera, a regional bank manager for Wells Fargo who lives in Roanoke, said Monday that she believes the credit union offers more options for the community. However, he does not see the DCCU’s Lexington office as a threat.

“Credit unions bring a lot of benefits, and many of our customers bank at the credit union and bank with Wells Fargo, but I don’t think it’s a big loss for the [Lexington] store because we have a lot of customers who are loyal to the bank and Wells Fargo,” Yera said.

Sarah Landram, an economic educator at DuPont’s Waynesboro division, said she hopes the Lexington branch attracts a diverse membership, including students.

“We’re a growing company,” Landram said. “Our plan is to continue to grow and build membership.”

The Lexington member center will initially have six employees, including a branch manager, an assistant branch manager and four staff members. The team, which is already formed and preparing for the inauguration, will start advertising through the field process.

“They go to local businesses and organizations and try to generate word of mouth business,” Landram said. “We use flyers, radio ads and sometimes even emails to let people know we’re in the community.”

Landram said it could take several years for a new credit union to bring in enough members and become successful.
