A man was killed Friday morning in a car crash that closed a section of State Route 94 near the city of San Diego.

According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), the incident was reported just after 4 a.m. when a Honda Accord and a Ford F-250 crashed on the westbound side of SR-94 near the northbound side of Interstate 5. The crash and investigation caused Caltrans to close the westbound lanes of SR-94 at 7:30 am. By then, the highway had reopened.

Sergeant Josh Nelson of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said his initial investigation showed that the driver of the Ford was going too fast and that caused the Honda to back the truck. According to Sergeant Nelson, the truck driver died in the incident while the Honda driver suffered minor injuries.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Four people were hit and killed on Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 94 outside of downtown San Diego.
The one-vehicle crash happened at 2:24 a.m. on eastbound SR-94 near Home Avenue and the transition to State Route 15, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A black BMW M3 with five passengers left town after the driver lost control, hit a fence and rolled several times, CHP officials said at the scene. Several witnesses told CHP officers they believed the car was going at least 100 mph.
Four people were thrown from the highway, and one of the victims was hit by another car that passed by, ABC learned.
Emergency crews announced that four of the evacuees died at the scene. CHP officers identified the victims as a 26-year-old man from La Mesa (the driver); a 35-year-old man from Chula Vista; 33 years old; and a 20-year-old woman from National City.
The 22-year-old female passenger from San Marcos was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. CHP officials told ABC that the only survivor was the right passenger who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The emergency response resulted in the closure of eastbound lanes of SR-94 in the immediate area, and southbound lanes of SR-95.
While the accident investigation is in its early stages, CHP officers at the scene told ABC they believe the crash was DUI-related. The policeman died at the scene. The officers later identified themselves as Jamie Huntley-Park and Ryan Park of the SDPD. He got married.
The California Highway Patrol has put together a timeline of the crash, where, how and why the wrong-way driver entered southbound I-5 northbound.
A few hours before the accident, just after 4 p.m., the suspected wrong-way driver was driving impaired, southbound on northbound I-15 near Fallbrook and collided with another vehicle.
The woman who was involved in the accident survived, but suffered multiple injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. According to the CHP, the 46-year-old at-fault driver was booked on a felony DUI charge.

The CHP is trying to determine the cause of a DUI crash involving four vehicles and one driver Thursday morning on southbound Interstate 5 near State Route 54.
CHP officers responded to the crash between SR-54 and Mile of Cars Way just after 2:30 a.m. and found a Nissan Frontier, Honda Accord, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Patriot involved in the incident. All vehicles except the Patriot were involved in the first crash, and the Patriot hit the Accord after the Accord went off the road, the CHP said.
The driver of the Accord was ejected from the vehicle when the Patriot hit it. He was taken to the hospital but did not survive, the CHP said. His identity is unavailable.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be a factor, but the CHP did not say which driver was suspected to be under the influence.
The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to please call San Diego area detectives at (858) 293-6000.
All southbound lanes of I-5 were closed after the crash, and the freeway had not fully reopened as of 6 a.m., according to Caltrans.
