All seven people in a car that was hit by a speeding car in north Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon died in the accident, authorities said this evening.

The six-car wreck happened at 3 p.m. at Cheyenne Avenue and Commerce Street when a northbound Dodge Challenger on Commerce ran a red light and collided with several vehicles, police said.

“We have a life lost that happened yesterday in our community,” North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee said tonight at a news conference. That was sad. It was more than sad. Each of these people was a family, a man, a woman, a child, an important person in our community.”
The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified those killed in the car as: Fernando Yeshua Mejia, 5, of North Las Vegas; Adrian Zacarias, age 10; Lluvia Daylenn Zacarias, age 13; Bryan Axel Zacarias, 15; Gabriel Mejia-Barrera, 23; David Mejia-Barrera, 25; and Jose Zacarias-Caldera, 35.
The driver of the Dodge was Gary Dean Robinson, 59, of North Las Vegas, and the passenger was identified as Tanaga Ravel Miller, 46, of North Las Vegas.
The North Las Vegas police chief said speed was a factor in the crash. Officials did not say how fast the car was going, but said the National Transportation Safety Board was assisting with the investigation as of Monday.

Fifteen people died in the crash, and one remains in critical condition at University Medical Center, officials said.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) – The driver who police say ran a red light before crashing his sport utility vehicle into a minivan, killing himself, his passengers and seven members of a North Las Vegas family, had a speeding record and prior convictions for drug and battery charges, authorities said Monday.
A member of the National Transportation Safety Board, Thomas Chapman, told reporters that state accident investigators will conduct an investigation he called “similar” to the one conducted by North Las Vegas police, looking into “significant safety concerns.” nationally.
“Our goal is not only to understand what happened, but also why it happened,” Chapman said, “and advocate for change so it doesn’t happen again.”

North Las Vegas Police Officer Alexander Cuevas confirmed that the driver who caused the crash, Gary Dean Robinson, 59, of North Las Vegas, had a long history of traffic and criminal activity.
Robinson pleaded guilty nine days before Saturday’s fatal crash in Las Vegas in December and faces a $150 fine, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, citing court documents.
Las Vegas police also gave Robinson a speeding ticket last August; by North Las Vegas police three times between November 2020 and February 2021; by Henderson police once in 2017, the Review-Journal found.
Robinson served a state prison term after pleading guilty in 2004 to possession of cocaine and violating his probation, and was found guilty in 2009 of assaulting a bailiff in court, court records showed.

A man who identified himself as Robinson’s son, Gary Robinson Jr., declined to comment by phone Monday to The Associated Press.
On Saturday, according to police, Robinson’s maroon Dodge Challenger went more than 100 mph through a red light on a busy road and struck a Toyota Sienna minivan carrying seven family members, causing a crash that involved three others. vehicles including a Ford Fusion in which a 31-year-old woman was seriously injured.
It could take up to four weeks for investigators to learn from blood toxicology tests whether Robinson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the afternoon crash, said Dan Kulin, a spokesman for Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse.
The driver, Jose Zacarias-Caldera, 35, died in the minivan; and passenger David Mejia-Barrera, 25; Gabriel Mejia-Barrera, 23; Bryan Axel Zacarias, 15; Lluvia Daylenn Zacarias, age 13; Adrian Zacarias, age 10; and Fernando Yeshua Mejia, 5. They lived in North Las Vegas, Rouse said.

“We were all family,” said Isaac Barron, a North Las Vegas City High School teacher who said his students grew up with Bryan Zacarias and identified him as a popular and funny schoolmate.

Rouse on Monday identified the passenger who died in Robinson’s wrecked car as Tanaga Ravel Miller, 46, of North Las Vegas.
The Spanish-language online fundraiser GoFundMe founded by Erlinda Zacarias identified those killed in the minivan as her family and said there are no words to describe the pain and suffering she and her husband are going through. News reports that 4,000 donors have contributed more than $175,000 as of Monday.
