One person was killed and another seriously injured Monday night when two vans collided in Cranston, Rhode Island.
Dead In East Providence Crash
Cranston police confirmed the injuries to NBC affiliate WJAR and said it appeared the vans were traveling in opposite directions when one vehicle crossed a double yellow line and collided with another van on Skate Street.
Police told WJAR that first responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate two people from a vehicle. Police identified the driver as Garrison Gonzalez, 61, of Leominster, Massachusetts, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
First responders were trying to figure out how to remove a van from the scene because it contained highly flammable oxygen tanks, three of which were leaking, police said.
Police have not yet said what they believe caused the other driver to crash into traffic. What happened is still under investigation.

East Providence police responded to reports of a serious vehicle crash on Pawtucket Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles, a Subaru in the driveway and a Nissan in the front lawn of a residence on Pawtucket Avenue east of Bowen Road.
Police found three people at the scene of the crash: the two drivers and a passenger, who were all taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
The brother was sitting in the Nissan. The passenger has been identified as 24-year-old Jacob Crenshaw of Pawtucket. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the Nissan, 27-year-old Andrew Crenshaw, also of Pawtucket, was seriously injured. He is listed in critical condition and unconscious in the intensive care unit of RIH.

A 22-year-old Providence man was the operator of the Subaru and was in stable condition when last checked.
EPPD’s Traffic and Crash Reconstruction Unit, along with detectives, are investigating the crash. Preliminary investigations and reports of eyewitnesses indicate that excessive speed was the cause of this accident. There have been none since.
The debris field reached the nearby roads. Car parts were found in the yard of at least one house on Bowen Street, about 100 meters from the scene of the accident.
As of Monday morning, Aug. 21, EPPD Service Division Commander/Public Information Officer Capt. Michael J. Rapoza said there was nothing else to report about the incident. Andrew Crenshaw was still in the ICU and unconscious, so investigators had not yet been able to speak to him.
