Community Choice Credit Union Des Moines Iowa – In 2009, Polk County hired OPN Architects to renovate and expand Veterans Memorial Hall at the Iowa Event Center and provide an additional 60,000 square feet of meeting, ballroom and exhibit space.
The renovation of the 55-year-old hall will allow the center to host major events including state, regional and national conferences and exhibitions. The dramatic renovation included the removal of 7,200 auditorium seats and the creation of a second floor that provides an additional 63,000 square feet of seating and ballroom space within the auditorium.

Key design elements include maximum flexibility of use and function, curb access, audio-visual, audio, electrical, lighting and low-voltage systems to provide rooms with an optimal combination of function and space use. A new holding or staging area for food service equipment will be added to support the new banquet facilities. The design and use of existing building automation systems and MEP systems are integrated.

The design and remodeling of the Community Choice Credit Union Conference Center was completed along with the interior renovation of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Originally built in 1954, the arena was partially renovated in the mid-1980s with the addition of West Hall. Renovations focused on updates to public circulation, accessibility, creation of outdoor event space, celebration of existing dedicated monuments, and fresh plaza planting. Care was taken to create a large, intimate event space using soft views and planting to define a dynamic space for both small and large events. A private space has also been created outside the event space for small conversations and personal reflection.
The project presented logistical and timing challenges. The most important of these matters is that the center remains functional and operates at full capacity during all phases of this renovation. Diligent attention to creative planning and project scheduling allowed the team to meet these challenges.
