1st Community Credit Union Oregon – Credit unions in Oregon are warning about a scam involving fraudulent text messages. Even if the text looks legitimate, it can be tricky because people react immediately to the text.
Matthew Wilson, senior vice president of risk and governance at Oregon Community Credit Union in Eugene, said in some cases, fraudsters have been able to break into member accounts and withdraw thousands of dollars.

“It’s such a violation, you don’t want to trust anybody at that point,” Wilson said. “Many members feel embarrassed about being cheated. It’s part of the other message we’re trying to get out: don’t be shy. These people hack into your account and steal money for a living.

The scam, known as “smishing,” is a problem across the United States, Wilson said. If you don’t expect anything from your credit union, ignore the text messages, he advised. You can investigate unusual activity by calling the credit union, visiting your credit union’s website or accessing its app.
If you believe you have been defrauded, contact your financial institution immediately. The next step is to freeze your credit report and report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
