In 2015, passenger numbers increased for the first time since 2005, with Reno-Tahoe International handling 3,432,330 passengers, a 3.8 percent increase over 2014, according to airport data. The new flight addition is driven by the work of airport officials and the Reno-Tahoe Air Services Corporation, a nonprofit organization committed to maintaining and expanding air service in the region.

“Reno is very important for a number of reasons, including ski season,” Southwest Airlines spokesman Dan Lindson said, calling the new nonstop flight from Dallas a “really big deal.”
Delta Air Lines will fly three times weekly between Reno-Tahoe and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from December 19, 2016 to January 3, 2017. Delta flew from 2004 to 2009 and averaged 83 percent seat occupancy, according to airport data.
“This flight not only provides excellent nonstop access from Atlanta, one of the hottest ski markets, but also provides convenient one-stop connections with the Southeast’s top airlines,” said Wirth.

Adding some Southern California flights could allow Reno-Tahoe to compete with places like Utah and Colorado in terms of air connectivity, Werth said, adding that the region is “a demographic travel gold mine in North America.”
The airlines welcomed Southwest Airlines’ nonstop service to the Bay Area by returning flights to Oakland in June. Southwest Airlines flew the Oakland-Reno route until June 2013, and restoring service is a top priority for tourism and trade officials.
“We offered the service before gas prices skyrocketed, and we saw that as an opportunity,” Lindson said.
Worth said the flight is important to Reno’s large employers who want easy access to the Bay Area.

“Reno-Tahoe International is an access point to Central California, and Nevada offers a more business-friendly environment than the Golden State,” said Michael Boyd, aviation consultant and president of Boyd Group International. Combined with the national brands operating in the region and the high standard of living, the attraction of airlines becomes obvious.
“They are a very strong entertainment destination with a much broader base than their Las Vegas counterparts,” Boyd said. “There is no downward trend at the moment.”
