Las Vegas To Durango Co – New Mobility is a membership publication of the United Spine Association, whose mission is to empower people with spinal cord injuries and related disabilities to live successful and fulfilling lives.
I grew up on road trips and remember the excitement and wonder of driving the family van through different places. How did the world get like this? What is behind it? Time moves more slowly on the open road, it occurs to me I make the most of the present before it overtakes me Road trips give me time to slow down, roll down the windows, and take it in

Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Tours
The American Southwest holds a special place in my heart A colorful country full of cultural diversity is much more than a desert I designed an ambitious dream itinerary compiled from various travels in the region With enough time and gas money, you can tackle the entire trip in one consecutive multi-day segment, or tackle one or two segments at a time. Whatever you choose, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to take it in and enjoy all that the Southwest has to offer.
An international airport and many accessible hotels are enough to start your Las Vegas adventure. But before you head out, Las Vegas offers more than just gambling and shows
The Nine Museum features working lights from the old casino and store, and a barrier-free walkway for easy access. For Nature Lovers: The northern half of the Wetland Park Nature Preserve Loop is a paved trail and the remainder is rugged, natural terrain. Located 45 minutes southeast of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam offers several tour options, but only one is the guided power plant tour. The one-hour tour describes the building’s fascinating history and gives you a personal insight into its size and strength I will never forget the thrill of looking over the edge of the dam and standing in awe of the force of the water.
Whenever I travel through the Southwest, I stop in Sedona, Arizona It’s a five-hour drive from Las Vegas I wrote about the love of Sedona in New Motion (see source). Most of the trails in Sedona are rugged in nature, but the paved trails at Crescent Moon Ranch in Red Rock Crossing are special to me.

There are many day trip options while staying in Sedona Tuzigut National Monument contains extensive remains of a pueblo built by the Sinagua people, and Wupatki National Monument is located in AD. There are many structures starting from 500 Both offer scenic and culturally rich tours path Seeing them up close has deepened my perspective and appreciation for the local people and life in the area
From Sedona, it’s a four-hour drive north to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, located on the Arizona-Utcal border. If you see signs that you need to toast, stop and grab something Be prepared for busy roads in the park ($20 entry permit required). The building-shaped, carved sandstone formations make it one of the most photographed places in the world The visitor center is handicap accessible with easy access to restrooms and a second floor observation deck
A short drive across the Utah border, the Mexican hut rock formations, which require no reservations or admission, are as rocky as Sombrero. As befits the dirt road that takes you there, don’t expect any comfort – just stop, enjoy it and move on. | Another fun photo opportunity is Forest Gump Point, below Main Street, which offers a spectacular view of Monument Valley, made famous in the movie.
Two hours earlier you’ll find the Four Corners National Monument, a can’t-miss opportunity to be in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico at the same time. A ramp leads to where the four corners touch If you don’t have fried bread yet, make sure to get it here

Continuing southeast brings you to Albuquerque, the first of our three stops in New Mexico. New Mexico’s largest city hosts the spectacular Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, considered the world’s largest balloon festival. If you’re traveling anywhere in the region in October, you should adjust your schedule to see the 500 colorful balloons take to the sky. On the ground, you can get up close and personal on the flat, paved path around the bubble Make sure you book your stay in advance this time of year
Santa Fe is an hour away and its museums and galleries make it a must if you are interested in art However, as an 11th-century Spanish colony, access to some historic buildings can be frustrating for wheelchair users due to narrow doorways or lack of ramps. Accessibility is also a mixed bag when visiting the 80 galleries, studios and designers of the Cannon Road Art District, but you can still have a great time there. A downtown Georgia O’Keeffe Art Gallery is present and well worth a visit Some public transport is available Corazon is a private company that can be hired with a concierge and wheelchair accessible vans.
Another hour and a half north is picturesque Taos – the eastern end of our trip There’s plenty to see and do in Taos, but wheelchair users should head to the sardonic Wheeler Peak – New Mexico’s highest point. The two-and-a-half-hour Enchanted Circle ride gracefully skirts the mountains and offers an exciting photo op with plenty of spots to enjoy the beauty.
It’s worth the 12-mile hike over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which feels like you’re driving over the Grand Canyon. The picnic area on the other side of the bridge has parking, restrooms, and a paved road, but there is no access to the bridge. If you’re brave, you can access the bridge’s pedestrian walkway from the picnic area through the dirt parking lot opposite the bridge. There is a ramp, but the metal walkway has some big gaps where a wheel can get stuck, and it’s very windy because it’s on a hill.

There are too many national parks on this route to cover them all and it would be a shame to include them all in this article. Know that you are never more than two hours away from some of the most visited places in the world There could be no better place to use your National Park Access Pass (which offers free admission to US citizens with permanent disabilities). Here are the top picks for National Parks in the Southwest that you shouldn’t miss
West of Durango, Colorado, about four hours northwest of Taos When I arrived, the first parking spot was a simple blue and white sign with a picture of a man in a wheelchair and the words “Think of me – set him free.” The sign turned out to be a good thing. Getting around Durango in a wheelchair was easy It was beautiful even in winter A seven-mile paved bike path runs along the Animas River with several access points
The town is famous for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which runs 45 miles through the mountains to Silverton. With stunning views of forests and mountains, this train was voted the 20 Most Beautiful Train Rides of 2021 by USA Today readers. Decades ago, my grandfather traveled on this train I will always remember my grandfather’s love of trains, so to recreate that experience on my own journey was special. Access is also good The train has a lift and offers space for two electric wheelchairs in an accessible car. The staff removed the seats so we could be in our wheelchairs and there was a convenient toilet nearby. There are no dining cars available, but train staff are happy to serve you items from the train menu and a full bar. You can also bring your own food
Utah has five national parks – Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef and Zion – and all are accessible from this route (see Haven National Park above). Allow at least a few hours for each, but you can spend much longer, especially at Zion and Arch. One strategy is to explore the eastern part of the state with Moab as a hub and St. George as the western hub
