El Paso County Assessor Colorado – Schleiker, a Republican, is the only candidate to file with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office to run for the position, currently held by term-limited Republican Chuck Broerman.

If elected, Schleiker wants more transparency from the Office of the Clerk and Recorder, especially since Colorado’s congressional district commission could draw up 8 districts based on population.

To guide citizens, they want to create a visual map platform on the clerk’s and registrar’s websites that will separate counties by region so that citizens can easily identify voting districts and know the election results.

Schleiker said he also wants to implement more one-on-one opportunities with residents, such as town halls or coffee meetings, to better understand what the community wants and needs.

This will be especially important in the 2024 Presidential Election, he said, which is “under a huge microscope” after a tense 2020 election when President Donald Trump and others targeted election results tabulated via computers and mail-in ballots. Local and state leaders in Colorado and other countries dispute the claims.

“As an elected official, I think you have to go out and talk to the people. They elected you to work,” he said. “I think when you work with neighbors and build those relationships, you build trust.”

Schleiker has lived in the Pikes Peak area since 1975 and lives with his wife Kendra and three children west of Colorado Springs, according to his campaign website.

Although traffic to the site comes mostly from Pike Peak Realtors, surveyors, appraisers and others in the industry, Schleiker expects a shift to software products used by other appraisers in Colorado and the US. will help attract more residents, businesses and entrepreneurs. on site.

The product that Schleiker is targeting is a relatively new product. Ian Lamont, co-founder of Spatialest Inc., said his company’s Community software was founded about 18 months ago. Since then, more than two dozen appraisers across the country have signed contracts to use their products. Lamont said El Paso County’s neighbor to the north, Douglas County, is the first Colorado city to participate in the program.

“They’re going live soon,” he said, noting at least four other Colorado appraisers are in the process of convincing leaders to buy from Spatialest.

Lamont’s product, which he said was designed to help Assessors become a “shared resource” for communities and county governments, costs municipalities between $20,000 and $30,000 in annual licensing fees. And there’s also an upfront fee of $10,000 to $15,000 for design and setup services.

According to Schleiker, the El Paso County Division of Contracts and Procurement is reviewing a proposal to change the appraisal site.

“I wanted to make sure that I met all the requirements and met all the requirements regarding our hiring procedures,” he said.

If all goes according to plan, the new El Paso County appraisal site will launch on Jan. 1, 2017. Schleiker said this is an unusual year as his office conducted a full reassessment of more than 270,000 properties. He said the January rollout will give residents and others five months to learn how to use the software before local governments send tax rate notices.

The appraiser spoke with “several appraisers who now have the software.” He pointed to King County, Washington, and Davidson County, Tenn., as models for what he wants. Both Spatialest customers told Schleiker that they had seen a 30 to 40 percent drop in ratings appeal since the product’s launch. Schleiker said the downsizing will help the 51-employee office be more efficient and free up more time for other tasks.
