You don’t have to look far because it’s unofficial state law that every restaurant must serve pork. We recommend starting with old favorites like Smitty’s and B&B Grocery, serving up the famed filet mignon that’s a local favorite and frequented by the political press every batch season.
If you want an authentic Des Moines that’s more cloth napkin than wet dream, try our signature Steak de Burgo dish. A filet covered in garlic sauce and butter, as fair warning, can make future steaks a little boring. You can find it at almost any Des Moines steakhouse with an Italian name, but the dish at Tursi’s Latin King is so good we made a video about it.

Ugly but delicious would be the best way to describe Fong’s Pizza and Zombie Burger. Fong’s is an Asian-inspired pizza tiki bar whose famous Crab Rangoon pizza earned praise from Alton Brown on the Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Zombie Burger serves up inspired creations like the Walking Ched (a burger between a fried mac and cheese bun) and spiked milkshakes in a post-apocalyptic setting. It’s the perfect date night for horror fans.

But we have an insatiable appetite for flavor, so we’ll put on some stretchy pants and give it a try. Start with Eatery A and its patio overlooking “a row of restaurants” on Ingersoll Avenue. Happy hour is (even on the weekends) the worst-kept secret in town because it’s amazing (half-price pizza and drinks!).

HoQ prides itself on farm-to-table cuisine (we’re Iowans—we practically invented it) with an evolving menu that reflects what’s in season. For high-end food in an elegant setting, check out Clyde’s Fine Diner in the East Village. It’s not your grandfather’s restaurant, although he still likes the style.
