Used Cars Under 1000 By Owner – Looking for the best used cars under £1000? Finding a good used car on a tight budget is becoming increasingly difficult, but if you’re willing to ditch the base models for less obvious options, you can find reliable (and fun) transportation.
Even if the sellers don’t want to sell, there’s a lot to offer at this end of the price range. Popular, well-known models that owners sell cheaply when new cars arrive are now in high demand, and both private sellers and dealers will raise the asking price if they have a long MOT and are in good condition.

MINI, the original Cooper offers real excitement, with style inside and out, leagues ahead of any other of its time. Cargo and rear passenger space is dangerous. For a city car, it’s very capable in the country, with a downsized 1.6-litre engine and excellent handling. Today’s running MINI Cooper S (with its 163bhp engine) costs £3,000 more, but the standard 115bhp MINI One or Cooper offers plenty of power for everyday driving. Issues to watch out for: Pay attention to the transmission and electricals – transmission problems are well known. Overall build quality and rust resistance are superior to many inexpensive small cars of the era. Compared to models like the Fiesta or Fabia, the MINI has got personality, and personality goes a long way. Read our used MINI (2001-2006) review and buying guide
History shows you can’t go wrong with a Ford, and the Focus Mk1 replacement aims to significantly improve quality and practicality. There is a wide range of engines available, including a powerful 2.0-litre diesel, but the 1.6-litre petrol or diesel will be the target offering good performance and value for money. Most examples are available for around £1,000, but pushing it up to £1,500 will leave you with a lot to look forward to. Issues to watch out for: Beware of limp home modes that are costly mistakes and noisy suspensions with vague steering. The build quality of these Mk2 Focus cars is much better than the first generation cars, although reliability was less impressive. Manual transmission diesels are notorious for clutch and DMF issues, as well as the exhaust system problems common to all modern diesel cars. Complex keys and immobilizer systems can also cause problems, especially if the car’s battery drains quickly and goes flat. Read our used Ford Focus (2005-2011) review and buying guide
Much improved in the 900 Convertible, the Saab 9-3 can be found in the 1998 facelift and 2002 redesign at this price point. For improved interior quality and equipment, it’s worth looking for the latest model. 2.8 V6 Aero models deliver 276 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of 7.0 seconds. Both models offer decent room for four adults with excellent seating thanks to the raised glass rear window and multi-layered top and pass-through luggage space. The 1.8t Vector has great performance, but if you want real thrills, you can find an Aero – unless they’re projects, it’s out of the budget anyway. Points to watch out for: Forgotten Saabs are expensive to repair. Oil sludge on all four cylinders, timing chain on the V6, slipping/shedding clutch changes in the automatic transmission, and roof sync issues. Read our Saab 9-3 Convertible review

Arriving on the scene in 2002, the Mazda 6 is stylish and desirable, as well as reliable and practical. Available as a saloon, hatch or estate, the 6 was an interesting alternative to the mainstream Vectras and Mondeos that many bought. The previous 626’s bulletproof reliability took a bit of a hit thanks to some Ford-shared parts, but overall it’s still a solid choice at this price point. Your £1,000 example won’t be very low-mileage or well-equipped, but it will be spacious and comfortable for your family to drive. Issues to watch out for: The biggest problem with a car of this era was rust; so look carefully at any example you’re thinking of buying. Read our Mazda 6 review
This Fiat Panda continues the tradition of being compact and affordable enough to cross towns and cities. The small footprint and nine-metre turning circle are good for narrow roads and parking lots, but that upright body means there’s room for four people too. The boot may not fit everyone’s luggage (careful packing) and the interior is pretty basic, but top-spec Elegance or special edition models should be on the budget, so you’ll at least get alloy wheels, electric front windows and air conditioning. air conditioning – air conditioning Engine power may seem simple these days, but the Panda is flexible and offers everything you need when stopping traffic. Noticeable issues: rust on rear axle and subframes, noisy transmission, general wear and tear. Body rust can be a problem, but is more common on coastal vehicles. Trim and some electrical parts, such as lights, are significantly more expensive. Read our used Fiat Panda (2004-2011) review.
The Honda Civic has been a stalwart of the small family car brand for decades. So it’s no surprise that it’s well presented at this price point, even if you have to go back a few decades. The 2000-2005 Civic Focus Mk1 was a modest competitor, but it was generally designed much better for durability, and that now delivers. Your options are three- or five-door hatchbacks and 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrols. At the time, it was criticized for not being in diesel form, but that’s not a drawback now. Issues to watch out for: The engines are unreliable, there are minor rust issues, and the interior isn’t as durable as we’d like. But overall, your money buys a part, despite the high price of the parts. Read our used Honda Civic (2000-2005) review.
The Hyundai Getz is one of those cars that you can’t imagine in your head if you squint, and it’s a great example of how far its manufacturer has come in the last 20 years. But don’t ignore it—Hyundais are some of the best used cars on any budget. Well, the Getz won’t take your racing pulse or make your neighbors proud that you own one, but what matters is that it’s reliable, good value and cheap to run. I think the Getz is a great car to recommend to someone who wants a reliable vehicle to get them from A to B. Issues to look out for: Aside from looking at worn consumables, there are few reported issues, but keep in mind that Hyundai-specific parts can be more expensive than their European counterparts. Five Fast, Affordable Estate Cars For Under £10,000
The second generation Audi A4 has been around for seven years; In 2005, it introduced a facelift model of the now popular full-depth corporate grill. During that time, it became the executive and real estate salon of choice for upwardly mobile professionals. Twenty years on and the A4 remains a safe choice. Credibility is ho-hum, but survivors have had to overcome their worst flaws. There are plenty of diesels at this price point and they are very economical, the 1.9-litre being particularly reliable. But if you’re close to London or the emerging ULEZ areas, you may need gas. The 2.0-litre is very frugal and lively, but you’re still paying a handsome premium for the best. Issues to note: In addition to the automatic transmission, the window mechanisms, failed heater, rear window sticking to the converters. Read our Audi A4 (2000-2007) review.
If you’re sticking to a budget of around £1,000 and really fancy an SUV, your options are limited. But this is impossible. Step up to the Fiat Sedici, which is not only an SUV, but also has roof rails, a raised driving position and body cladding, and you can also buy a four-wheel drive version. Don’t worry about reliability: the Suzuki SX4 is brand new and much cheaper than its Japanese cousin. The engine and drive are bulletproof, the interior is solid and durable, and
