24 Hour Nurse Hotline Kaiser
In the past I have had bipolar disorder, Chiari malformation, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and upper airway resistance syndrome. I haven’t slept in almost a year. Feeling suicidal and in physical and emotional pain, the emergency room doctors told me to meditate and drink tea. Please tell me to keep standing up for my rights. But emergency rooms are only for people who are physically dying. Send references home that will probably have to wait a month or more. There’s more money here, Kaiser. It’s useless. Maybe they’ll save my sanity if I jump off the garage roof. I wonder if my sacrifice will make a difference in helping others who are suffering.

Last April, my son-in-law and daughter were murdered outside their home. He left behind a two-year-old daughter. It was a huge loss and the fear that something might happen to my daughter was destroying me. I suffered from many problems, including depression, severe anxiety, panic attacks, and other debilitating symptoms. I am asking for a referral for psychological help. He said someone would call me. Since then I have suffered mentally to the point where I feel it has caused lasting damage to my life and mental abilities. I complained to Kaiser but they never did anything again. I even did my best to file a complaint with the state. I received a message from my doctor who scheduled me for my first appointment but did not allow me to choose a date or time. They basically said, “Please do me a favor whether I’m there or not, but your date is here [while I’m at work].” After nine months of torture. I lost my job and am still suffering.
More than 1,400 Kaiser mental health patients have shared their stories of delayed or denied treatment at kaiserdontdeny.org, and the stories keep coming. Here is a recent story of a patient who was discharged from treatment too soon.
I suffer from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. I had a therapist who retired after three years of treatment. I was transferred to another therapist who I didn’t like. They told me their story and said I should go to that group. Another therapist with chronic pain helped me find a new therapist, but I also had to go to a group. It was November. This month I felt like I was making progress and was discharged from group and individual therapy. I was making progress because I was receiving treatment. Now no one can see me and my symptoms are getting worse. After my release, I had a nervous breakdown. You must enroll in ongoing treatment.

Kaiser’s only solution to my mental health problems was to prescribe medication to me. You miss the doctor and he wants to go to group therapy sessions, which didn’t help at all (and sometimes made you feel worse). Without personal interest. I have been an employee and member for over 38 years. I was very disappointed with the attention I received.

Every provider I met at Kaiser was incredibly attentive and caring, even when they weren’t right for me. They try to support you as best they can. If your condition is relatively stable a support group will help you, if your condition is poor the IOP will provide you with more attention and at least weekly meetings with your therapist while you are there. Very, very difficult. I work in the medical field and have very little income due to my living circumstances. I feel lucky to have received help, but feel helpless to receive more help. And seeing a therapist can help a lot. I’m afraid of losing him. It’s better than nothing. In many ways, I feel trapped in an abusive relationship with Kaiser’s mental health.

I waited months to get mental health treatment. I was assigned an in-house marriage and family counselor. These are not my concerns. They said there was no psychologist. At first they told me I could leave, but they denied my request. They also said my insurance (Medicare) does not cover this. Member Services stated that this was not true. They canceled my appointment yesterday because I was waiting for one. No one called to reschedule or explain anything. Service denied internally or externally.

The following are recent examples of patients referred by Kaiser to outside providers. There, staff changes and waiting times for treatment were long.
My experience with Kaiser Mental Health over the past 9 years has been terrible. I was referred to a contracted mental health clinic, which was absolutely terrifying. I either hired another therapist or my therapist kept leaving. I had to wait in the waiting room for an hour and every time I went in there was a new receptionist training. One time I walked in and the receptionist said, “I told the doctor you were here.” An hour later, the doctor finally called me and said he was having lunch and didn’t know I was there. I went to a private therapist and asked my GP to prescribe me antidepressants. The GP said this was a big problem for his employer, KP.

2021 National Bargaining Updates (historical)
I was seeking mental health help after losing a family member. It took a long time to get help. The overall experience with assistance was pleasant. They provided me with good service when attending. I believe I still need treatment, but Kaiser’s hours have ended, so I need to seek outside mental health care.
More than 1,400 Kaiser mental health patients have shared their stories of delayed or denied treatment at kaiserdontdeny.org, and the stories keep coming. Here’s a recent story from another patient who felt abandoned by Kaiser.
On October 26, 2021, I attended a mental health conference with Kaiser. At this meeting, I expressed active suicidal thoughts and described the severe abuse I had recently experienced. The doctor who admitted me noticed that I had scored very high on a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assessment and recommended an urgent care visit. My appointment is scheduled for January 31, 2022, more than 3 months after our first phone call. On November 16, 2021, I filed a complaint with Kaiser claiming their service was negligent and requesting a referral to an outside company. I was told it would take at least 30 days to hear back about Kaiser’s decision. When I called the psychiatry department to make an early appointment, I was told that the first available appointment date was March 3, 2022. As a health care provider, I am shocked and disgusted by the gross negligence of this mental health care system. In my opinion, this system is criminal and clearly harmful to patients seeking treatment.
I have been going on and off Kaiser for a while and now suffer from severe depression and anxiety. You can’t make an appointment with a therapist and have to go and pay for an outside therapist. When I returned to Kaiser, I had to wait three months to see a psychiatrist. I was given four weeks of disability due to the severity of my symptoms. I feel suicidal every day and need someone to be with me to keep me safe. my doctor knows
