Just Like Home Too Daycare & Preschool – There are so many positives to opening your home as a child care service that you can share with other families and their children… but I’m not going to lie, it can be frustrating, tiring and annoying and you may feel that way a lot. Your home is no longer your home, but just a place to work.
I’m often asked how I cope with using my home instead of a garage, spare room, or even Grandma’s apartment, as is the case with many home daycares. Well, first of all, I’m not getting anything out of it and I’m not going to spend any extra money to make it happen.

One of the things I love about Family Day Care or FDC for short (what we call Home Day Care in Australia) is that children enter a home environment every day of their care. It’s not huge and scary, not full of unusual things, not really different from their home and routine. There are many wonderful spaces at FDC where educators have transformed granny flats and cabins into special, welcoming environments for children, but my personal opinion is that a home care environment adds something special and unique.

I also like that I can walk around my house during treatment times and not be limited to one room or garage space. However, everyone is different and what works for me may not work for another educator… and that’s okay!
Since I’ve been asked a few times now, while I wanted to share how I’ve set up our home for care, I’ve also tried to keep it a welcoming and homey place for my family… we get to live here every day Life!
Just because you need to add more toys and furniture for the kids doesn’t mean you have to let them use your home. The picture below shows our lounge and I know we have a large space available and it is very comfortable and may not be included in this post… but I promise you can still bring some of these ideas with you.

Our house is furnished in the old Federal style with lots of wood and older furniture. That’s why I bought vintage furniture pieces from thrift stores and flea markets that fit the style of my home – not just because I need storage space. I use a lot of baskets and soft natural colors because I like them best and I don’t have kids screaming at me every time I enter the room (unfortunately the kids behind me manage to do it without much use!)
If you’re going for an industrial look, look around where you normally buy your furniture and storage and go from there. Just because you have toys for kids doesn’t mean you have to display them 24/7. Take them out as often as possible!
Personally, I love shelves, they offer so many storage options and yet you can usually move them without much effort if something needs to be changed.
These box shelves had a more modern style than I would normally go for, but they are so useful and I knew baskets would help break them up a bit.

At the end of the day, I put everything in their baskets or put them back on the shelves and immediately feel separated and able to reclaim my home. Well, at least until my two decide to regroup and play with everything again after the FDC kids leave, but that’s another “challenge”, don’t say that again 😉
Before lunch I do a quick clean-up with the children (it’s important to show them how to pack and take care of their space) and then again when all the children have left. It only takes about 20 minutes, but it really helps me get everything out of the way. I think I can return to “home” mode then.
I’m going to be completely honest here and say that I usually do it again around 8:30pm after my girls have finally gone to bed, as they often drag things out again in that helpful 3-girl way… unless you have younger children. Then, sweetie, this extra step isn’t necessary!
The other great thing about shelves is that you can place little play invites on or in them so the kids can find them anywhere as they explore the house. It also gives them a place to focus while packing.

I love tables for the same reason: I constantly rearrange my tables depending on the age of the children being treated and what works for my family too.
I’ve added some plastic covers to protect the surfaces, but I’m also trying to find patterns that match our interior design. Since I have small children of my own, I usually leave them on unless you just rub them in and fold them up at the end of the day.
I bought this old round table at a thrift store and carried it around the house. Don’t be afraid to try different things and if they don’t suit your family, return them!
For safety reasons and to create additional shelf space, we also removed the glass doors from our entertainment unit. Here too, I think the baskets help to hold the whole thing together.

I use the dollhouse as a shelf even when the children get tired of playing with the doll for a while.
I had his patients do it in a pan and leave it natural with just a coat of varnish to protect it so it would match our home. Yes, I know it still looks like a dollhouse, but I’m not trying to hide all traces of children…just associate it with our surroundings as best I can.
If you use most parts of your home for therapy, think outside the box and utilize as many smaller spaces as possible. And so I integrated it into a reading/rest area. The bookshelf also hides a few drawers from the hands and minds of curious toddlers!
This is our relatively small dining/kitchen area. By making a small concession and placing the dining table against the wall instead of in the center of the room, there is room for a mat as well as the children’s table, which is used for eating and messy craft and dough activities.

By dividing your rooms in your home, children can find their area of interest or quiet/busy activity and slow down as they find new spaces to explore or work.
Of course you need some childproof locks for your cabinets, but if you don’t like the way they look all over your house, try the magnetic locks, you won’t see a thing!
You need to be organized and arrange some storage space, otherwise you will always be trying to find the kitchen table, your favorite chair and the rug!
I have a small room next to one of the bedrooms that I converted into a storage area for all the art and toys we aren’t using this month. It makes rotating toys and choosing materials for my plan much easier. If you don’t have that much space, you can find lots of great space-saving ideas and storage examples on Pinterest.

I like to rotate toys each month and go into my craft closet at the beginning of each week to organize and lay out what I need for the week ahead according to my plan. Make use of the space you have… I have very little storage space as it is an old house with no built-in cupboards, but by stacking plastic bins and arranging resources I am able to keep most of these things out of the main section . of the house
I decided to use my back porch area as my FDC entry. Parents and children enter directly into our backyard through my side gate and then up a few steps to the porch. Here I have a signing table, a place for the kids to hang their bags and an old fridge for lunch boxes, bottles and drinks.
It took a little more work to set up, but it means I can keep family-only access to our front door and not have parents or siblings constantly walking around my house. I have nothing to hide, this is just a way to keep some privacy for my family members.
