Palm Springs International Airport (IATA: PSP, ICAO: KPSP, FAA Member: PSP), formerly Palm Springs Municipal Airport, is an airport located two miles (3 km) east of downtown Palm Springs, California, United States. The airport covers 940 hectares and has two runways.

PSP was built in 1939 as an emergency landing field for the United States Army Air Corps on land owned by the Agua Calite Band of Cahuilla Indians for its pristine weather and proximity to March Valley and the Los Angeles area.
In March 1941, the War Department announced improvements to the existing Palm Springs Airport for national defense. The airfield was approved by the 21st Ferrying Group of the Air Corps Ferrying Command in November 1941 to serve as a staging area. Many personnel from the Airlift Command’s 560th Army Air Base Unit stayed at a nearby comfortable guest ranch in La Paz. Training at the airfield was conducted by the 72d and 73d Ferrying Squadrons in long-range aviation and water navigation. Later, pilot training was also conducted by the 459th Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron of the IV Fighter Command. Training was conducted in P-51 Mustangs, P-40 Warhawks, and P-38 Lightnings.
On June 1, 1944, training moved to Brownsville Army Airfield, Texas, and the airfield was used for Army and Navy transport flights until April 1945. The Auxiliary Field or Reserve Field was declared redundant on 12 May 1945, and the Auxiliary Field on 12 May 1945. The main airfield was declared surplus and in 1946 was placed at the disposal of the War Assets Administration and sold to private buyers. The City of Palm Springs purchased the land in 1961 and developed it into the Palm Springs Municipal Airport.

In 2010, WestJet began serving PSP, with flights to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. In 2011, the airline added flights to Toronto and resumed year-round service to Calgary.
The airline has since dropped Toronto, but has since added seasonal service to Winnipeg and made Vancouver year-round. In November 2011, Frontier Airlines began service to PSP and a seasonal flight to Dover.
The airline served PSP from 2011 to 2021, but declined to expand flights to Ontario. In December 2011, low-cost airline Virgin America began seasonal service to PSP from San Francisco, and in 2012, the airport launched its first service to New York’s JFK Airport. The airline renewed the service in 2016 throughout the year.

Getting From Los Angeles Lax Airport To Palm Springs
In 2013, a new air traffic control tower was opened at the airport, replacing the airport’s old tower (which had been in use since 1967), while giving air traffic controllers a better view of the airfield and aircraft at the airport.
In the 2019-2020 season, Delta made Seattle its main route and expanded to Atlanta three times a week using Boeing 757s. The airline also used an Embraer E175 on one of its flights to Salt Lake City. In November 2019, Alaska Airlines began service to Payne Field in Everett.
However, airlines have suspended seasonal and some year-round destinations in 2020 due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, as traffic declined sharply in March.
And Canadian service was nearly canceled due to the temporary closure of the Canada-US border (although WestJet continued to operate PSP with reduced frequency).

Delta upgraded Atlanta to thrice-weekly daily service from December through April with a Boeing 737 and Minneapolis-St. Paul operates a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 aircraft twice a day during peak season (depending on passenger demand). The airline also reinstated its main route to Seattle using Boeing 737s and Airbus A220s, becoming the first (and currently only) airline to operate the A220 on PSP. Delta also added capacity on the long-haul Salt Lake City route, replacing the CRJ-200 with the larger CRJ-900 and Embraer E175. Delta still occasionally uses the Boeing 757 as a jet transfer to Palm Springs when demand is high.
In August 2021, the airport renovated and expanded the ticket sales area. A new baggage handling system was also installed to accommodate passenger growth and demand.
