Louisiana State University (LSU) began with several grants from the United States government – in 1806, 1811, and 1827 – to build a university. The school, Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy, was chartered by state law in 1853 and opened near Pineville in 1860. William Tecumseh Sherman was its first president, a position he later resigned to become a general in the army. The school was closed twice during the American Civil War and burned down in 1869; reopened in Baton Rouge the same year. In 1870 the school’s name was changed to Louisiana State University. In 1877 it received land grant status (according to the Morrill Act of 1862) and was incorporated with the Louisiana State Agricultural and Technical College.
