The company said the change was made because Congress passed the Internet Sex Trafficking Act to combat child sex trafficking. It was approved by the Senate earlier this week but criticized by free speech advocates and sex service providers, Alina Seljuka reported.

According to Craigslist, the purpose of the law is “to hold websites criminally and civilly liable when third parties (users) illegally exploit people online.”
“Any tool or service can be abused,” Craigslist said. “We can’t take this risk without jeopardizing all of our other services, so we’re unfortunately taking Craigslist Private offline. We hope to be able to restore it one day.”
The site adds, “To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples we’ve met on Craigslist, we wish you all the best!”
Supporters of the move argued that it would increase accountability for content posted by users of websites that promote the sale of child sex.

But according to Alina, tech companies see it as “the first big cut that these companies are legally protected by.” And sex workers in this industry reduce people’s safety, push them out onto the street or into a dark cage.
Trump has yet to sign the bill, known as FOSTA. It passed the House 388-25 and the Senate 97-2.
Until 2009, Craigslist had an “Erotic Services” section where people openly advertised for sex. It changed its name to Adult Services that year and vowed to step up its investigation after a Boston medical student was accused of murdering a woman he met on the site, Tovia Smith noted. In 2010, Craigslist finally stopped listing “older service” ads, and its private sector has reportedly continued to this day.
While the site’s popular “Sent Connections” section remains in the US, the private section is still available outside the US, requiring users to certify that they are 18 years of age and understand that they may be viewing adult content.
Living Without The Truck
Reddit also announced a policy change this week. It says users cannot use the site to “solicit or promote any transaction or gift in relation to certain goods or services”.
Reddit said in a statement: “Reddit is not intended to be used as a marketplace, and does not, however, assume any responsibility for any transactions that individual users may decide to make.” As the site says, “Always remember: You’re dealing with strangers on the Internet.”
