Pro Bono Elder Law Attorney – In addition to helping charities, we also help individuals through existing pro bono initiatives: our lawyers volunteer at local legal clinics to help applicants who cannot afford legal advice; We undertake civil cases involving complex law or facts through the Law Society’s Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) and through the Office of Legal Aid. 30 of our lawyers have been appointed by Singapore’s Ministry of Law (“MinLaw”) as assessors under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act 2020 (“the Act”). Our lawyers are appointed by the Minister of Justice to resolve disputes arising from the application of the Act. Covid-19 has caused an unprecedented economic shock. Many individuals and businesses have failed to meet contractual obligations due to Covid-19 and the associated safe distancing measures. The Act came into effect on April 20, 2020. Temporary relief from legal claims for failure to perform certain contracts and for individuals and companies in financial difficulties unable to meet contractual obligations due to COVID-19. We assisted Minla in assessing 65 cases involving requests for assessor’s opinion.

Two of these clinics, the South East Legal Clinic and the Central Legal Clinic, operate in association with the Law Society, and the third operates in association with the Whampoa Community Centre. The Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (“CLAS”), established by the Singapore Pro Bono Services Law Society (“LSBPS”), provides criminal legal aid to the poor and indigent who cannot afford a lawyer. – Offenses punishable by death. Pro Bono Opportunities — Northeast Legal Aid
A group of 8 students from Elderlow set up the Wills Service at the Citizens Advice Bureau on Fairfax Street in Bristol city center and the charity Paul’s Place in Colpit Heath.
“It’s a great opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives and put our knowledge into practice.”
As well as drafting wills, the team has helped Paul’s Place clients create durable powers of attorney, including allowing relatives to make decisions about care home matters. This followed previous sessions held at the Disabled People’s Trust building in Colpit Heath, where the group held a question and answer session on making a will.
In addition to working with clients, the Elderlaw team has produced a series of pamphlets, podcasts and posters on wills and probate matters, launched a website and maintains a blog.

Melinda Chang, a third-year student at the John Marshall School of Law, thanked AT&T for its generosity this semester to customers in need at the Chicago Center for Disabilities and the Elderly (CDEL).
Chang, who focused on elder law during law school, said choosing the AT&T Pro Bono in Excellence Fellowship helped make the decision to continue working at CDEL. She completed an internship and volunteered there for two semesters.
“I am very grateful to have been selected for this honor,” said Chang. “I really enjoyed my time at the agency and am delighted to have the opportunity to continue my volunteer work.”

Chang was selected by the AT&T Midwest Community Foundation Committee to receive a $2,500 award to be used toward her law school tuition. The purpose of the award is to encourage “a long-term commitment to professional service in a student’s future professional practice,” said John J. Reidy III, co-chair of the philanthropy committee.
Thomas K. Wendt, CDEL’s general counsel, said Chang has worked on several important cases for CDEL, and his work this past semester has made him a key member of the team.
After graduating from Bryn Mawr College and working as a paralegal, Chang moved to Chicago to attend law school. She didn’t have a legal specialty in mind, but she realized that elder law was an up-and-coming area of the law, and after working at CDEL, she discovered that she loved working with clients.
“Elder law is about more than preparing wills and trusts,” Chang explained. “While there is a big movement for seniors to plan ahead so they can avoid legal problems as they age, the people I’ve helped have dealt with debt collectors, landlords and other urgent matters. Those who face such problems
