According to Vacek, it is difficult for a family with one income to live as it is. He says it’s good that just because the value of the house is going up, it doesn’t mean that the property tax will go up.
The February housing statistics for the Tri-Cities area are out and the median sales price is just over $450,000.
“Property taxes are very high right now,” Vacek said. “Rising home prices are good for home sellers.”

Spencer said if you see an increase in property values, the district will not be able to calculate how much you pay each month until the budget comes in and they calculate the taxes.
If the value of your property increases to $75,000, the new amount will be $740 per year or $62 per month.
The state of Washington is extending financial assistance to residents, businesses and workers to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic that is affecting the state’s economy. Gov. Jay Inslee announced a new aid package for people struggling with lost wages due to business closures in what he called “unprecedented times.” The package will include: Financial assistance through the Family Emergency Assistance program will be provided to families without children. Waiver of the one-week waiting period for payments from a-kassen. The order went into effect on March 8, when emergency provisions increased unemployment insurance payments to cover more workers affected by the outbreak. All tax-related measures came into force on 29 February, when the state of emergency was first declared. Suspension of eviction for the next 30 days for non-payment of rent unless the landlord can make a sworn statement that it is necessary to protect the health and safety of the tenant or others. This comes as the Federal Housing Finance Agency ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to halt foreclosures and evictions for 60 days. It needs resources to stop disconnections due to non-payment of bills, cancel late payments for customers who lose their jobs, and extend bill assistance to financially affected customers. According to Spencer, the tax notices that people receive should arrive in 2024. He said as a taxpayer he was also shocked.

A change has been made regarding eligible income for the Franklin County Property Exemption program for the elderly and disabled.
According to Spencer, the Assessor’s office offers a program for seniors and people with disabilities who may qualify for lower property tax rates. He said all you have to do is call them or go to their office to register. In an effort to improve usability and efficiency, Benton Area Transit (BAT) is preparing for a major software upgrade. The current orchestration software, which has been in use for nearly two decades, is nearing the end of its support cycle. The intersection of Chapel Drive and South 19th Street in Philomath will be temporarily closed, scheduled for August 5 – 20, 2023, 24 hours a day. The closure will be in effect on Chapel Drive from South 16th Street to Bellfountain Road. Local access will be maintained, but the intersection of South 19th Street and Chapel Drive will NOT be accessible.
