Herrick, a model extraordinaire, is in his second season at Rock Valley, transitioning to professional distance running in Brooks, the best running shoe of all time.

“The care of patients, surrounded by great people with great passion is also important,” said Herrick, who was sent to the sunshine and heaven on Monday in November, singing the praises of his friend and mentor, senior PT Beth Schweizer Des Moines Clinic Manager Dave Freesman, the rest of the West Des Moines staff and a wonderful RVPT patient named Dean Furness.
Schweizer, a 13-year veteran of Rock Valley, has spent two decades improving the lives of others. Schweizer is a real difference maker as he mocks personal identity, mocking the praise of those around him. Passionate about her role, Schweizer goes above and beyond to touch the lives of many. Freesman, both passionate and big-hearted, forever dedicated to his craft. An accomplished athlete himself, Freesman also understands the benefits of a good farm pond.
“Let’s start with Beth, who was the first person in my career to take the time to mentor me,” Herrick said. “He has done it in many areas, including women’s health. He is a great tool for women’s health, physical therapy or physical therapy of the pelvic floor. He has invested a lot of time in me, not only as a therapist , but also as an athlete therapist.
In 2011, Furness, a father of three, husband and former football player at Central College in Pella, Iowa, was paralyzed when a 1,000-pound hay bale fell on him after the tractor he was using went off the road. The blow broke the Wells Fargo analyst’s spine, leaving him unable, even after surgery, to produce motor function in his lower extremities.

Furness, one of life’s true treasures, refused to slow down, pointing to the many good things around him to make himself feel.
Since the accident, Furness has competed – at an almost elite level – in seven marathons and 10 half marathons as a wheelchair athlete. He continued to coach girls basketball and spent several years as a high school football coach. He also serves on the board of the Martensdale-St. St. Mary’s Community School in Martensdale County, Iowa.
Back to Dave (Freesman) brought me back to the beginning of 2003, “Furness, a laugh-a-minute type, with a great memory and a deep understanding of the world around him. “We’ve been friends for a long time approx. We are always happy.
After being released from a Colorado-based rehab center in early 2012, Furness was concerned about life without pain medication and how to develop and maintain strength in his abdominal area. He turned to Schewizer.

“I want to know what hurts and what doesn’t,” he said. “I don’t want (pain medication) to cover what hurts and what doesn’t. It’s a difficult thing to do, but it has to be done. It can eat you up and it depends on you. And it’s used in strengthening the abdominal area, which is below the ribs, two buttons are formed.
Herrick said both patients and therapists – Schweizer and Furness – refused to back down in the face of challenges. Together they helped Furness reach the height – athletically – he knew they were within reach, but he was still nowhere to be found since the accident.
“I got to know Beth and her great work as Dean when I was here in 2015 and 2016,” Herrick said. “He decided, and he wanted to help him be better and be whatever he wanted to be. Of course, there were challenges, but that didn’t stop him.
“Fast forward two years and I’m running the professional women’s Chicago Marathon,” Herrick added. “Suddenly I saw this face and I recognized him in a wheelchair. I had just come out of a women’s professional team meeting and the guys were going to meet afterwards. And Dean was there. He was we had a great conversation in the hotel lobby. He had no idea he had made it this far at the start line of the professional marathon which touched me on a personal level all the work Beth did with him was a great experience.”

Furness also jokes when he talks about Schweizer and the therapist-patient relationship. He calls himself the leader of his team and jokes about other names he and Freesman have, but the conversation is another time and setting.
“You can learn a lot about this world by looking at the floor,” Furness said. “And I mean every time I’m at the table and I look down and see Beth in her running shoes – something that has to be kept up on the floor – I know it’s one of those ‘days I have that.’ you just have to have a different plan, but there is no such thing as “running shoes”.
“First of all, Dean is a great person,” she said.. “A great sense of humor, driven and a good guy. He loves everything he does and cares about the people around him. Watch I’m on Dean and Work with Dave (Freesman) I’m amazed at the sacrifices they make.
“It helps to be married to a chiropractor,” Schweizer said of her husband, Todd, who fits people with prosthetic legs for OSSUR, the world’s largest manufacturer of orthopedic equipment, including braces and devices, pressure treatments , and prosthetics.

“That was an area coming out of PT school where I was clearly lacking,” Schweizer said. “I’m not ready to deal with patients who are pregnant and amputation. I feel like I’m not enough training in either area. Alhamdulillah the opportunity to better myself in those areas, especially in RockValley.”
Herrick said Schweizer understands the growing need for people who are able to work and are struggling after an amputation.
“That’s the way it is,” Herrick said. “If someone is active and motivated after going through something natural, Beth can really do something. She has had several opportunities to speak at conferences where she, as a PT, has taught prosthetics the importance of being a dedicated PT .I know that she traveled around the world to speak and share that it really took this special.”
For Furness, the final months of 2020 are short. The pandemic has disrupted his racing schedule. He said he was going to Schweizer to help him prepare for his next race.

“Working on my elbow, doing what we can as quickly as possible,” Furness said. “Whatever it takes, I know I have someone in Beth to help me get through it. She’s always been that way.” graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health in 2017. He then attended Des Moines University where he received his Doctorate in Physical Education in 2020. He received training in pelvic floor rehabilitation from the Herman and Wallace Rehabilitation Institute to treat giving women with pelvic pain, urinary frequency and urgency, urinary incontinence, and incontinence pre- and post-oral therapy for infants and children Alex and her husband are newlyweds and live in Waukee at Lake Rathbun in the fall.
