SAN FRANCISCO – Two motorcyclists were arrested on suspicion of DUI after a motorcyclist died after being thrown from his bike and landing on the freeway Tuesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim died in a series of collisions that occurred around 3:30 a.m. on the ramp from southbound US-101 to eastbound I-80.

The chain of events began when the driver of a Nissan sedan blocked one lane of traffic in the area.
“I believe he turned right and hit the right wall, which caused him to hit the right wall,” said CHP Officer Mark Andrews.
At the time, the Honda sedan was traveling westbound on I-80 toward the southbound US-101 interchange, CHP said.
A motorcyclist was thrown from his bike, struck another vehicle and fell from an overpass in San Francisco to the freeway below on Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP said the motorcyclist ran over the Honda, landed on its roof, then veered onto the freeway, forcing the driver to stop.

The motorcyclist may have been hit by multiple vehicles and died at the scene, said Andrews.

Cyclist Hit By Waymo Driverless Car In San Francisco
Last week, a driver making an illegal turn in the downtown Valencia Street bike lane hit a woman on a scooter and sent her to the hospital, Mission Local reported.
The woman was riding an electric scooter shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday when a Toyota driver drove through a large gap that surrounds the cycle path near Sycamore Street.
“She screamed and then you hear the crash,” said a cyclist who was behind the woman at the time, who identified himself as Josh. He said the woman was conscious but “unresponsive.”
Photos obtained by Mission Local show that the driver and passenger were thrown from the vehicle and the scooter rider was lying next to the scooter.

Witnesses called for help and Josh was rushed to a local hospital in an ambulance as the woman “groaned in pain”.
Fire Department Captain Jonathan Baxter said the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening. But the incident confirmed the fears of safe streets advocates, who have criticized it for forcing cyclists and scooter riders to cross the middle of an empty road in the middle of two-way traffic.
San Francisco police spokeswoman Goni Sepulveda said the driver, Kamani Edwards, 32, was cited for making an illegal U-turn in a business district. It is not clear if he will face further consequences for injuring the woman on the scooter.
City planners and bike infrastructure experts criticized the central bikeway as dangerous, and residents rejected the plan last year, but the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency announced a 12-month pilot program in April.

Last week, the transit agency’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee on the MTA’s board of directors called on the pilot program to be scrapped, calling it “unimaginative and dangerous.”
Mission Local reported two other bike accidents this summer during bike lane construction, and last month a pedestrian was killed at an intersection in Valencia.
“I’m afraid there are many other examples, and we don’t even know about them,” said road safety advocate Luke Bornheimer, who has long urged the MTA to abandon the idea of central cycle lanes. Adequate protection for residents using cycle infrastructure.
“We are fully committed to the pilot and its evaluation and reporting process,” said MTA spokesman Steven Chun. “We will know more about changes in crash patterns once we have completed the initial phase of the pilot evaluation.”

Josh called Valencia’s old cycle lanes, which put cyclists on the right side of traffic, “terrible”, referring to cyclists swerving around double deckers and drivers opening doors in dangerous cycle lanes.
But “at least you were prepared for it,” he said. “Now, there is something wonderful about having security when there really is no security.”

A track cycling champion died this week after being hit by a car while cycling in San Francisco, underscoring the city’s fight to reduce traffic deaths.
Cyclist Ethan Boyce, 44, was hit around 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Presidio intersection, the U.S. Park Police said in a statement.

Mr Boyes was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead, the agency said.
The driver of the vehicle, whose name has not been released, was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It is unclear if the driver will face charges.
The crash shocked the San Francisco cycling community, not only because of the death, but also because it happened in an area where bike safety activists have repeatedly called for improvements.
The heavily used bike path that connects the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, which covers nearly 1,500 acres at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, has been a safety concern for cyclists for years.

Boyes was hit Tuesday afternoon while riding his bike around the Presidio, a historic park south of the Golden Gate Bridge, authorities said. Boyes was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later pronounced dead. He was 44 years old.
Boyes has had a storied career, including setting the all-time record in the 1000m time trial in 2015. He was a 10-time national champion.

“Accident investigations are complex and require the analysis of large amounts of evidence and data,” the agency said in a statement. “USPP detectives are working in partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues.”

Danger Crossing San Francisco’s Rail Tracks On Bike
Four weeks ago, on the southeast corner of 17th and Guerrero streets, 81-year-old Mary’s life was turned upside down.
