I always thought Reno was all casinos and desert and it really wasn’t that long ago. t on my adventure radar. Well, I’m so wrong! Reno seems to be Nevada’s best kept secret and will always amaze you with its vibrant and hip culture. Besides, who doesn’t want to visit the nearby (beautiful!) Boeung Ta Ho?! So to all the adventurers out there in this post I will share the best things to do in Reno Tahoe.
The best way to get around Reno is by bike. The city has done a great job of making cycling available to residents and visitors, with beautiful river roads and plenty of space for everyone. We rented a nice bike from our hotel (Renaissance Downtown Reno) and explored for half a day.
We hit our favorite coffee shop (Hub Coffee Roasters), Burning Man art installations, lots of street murals, and biked the Truckee River Bike Trail. Don’t forget to grab your camera as there will be lots of shooting scenes to shoot.

One of the highlights of our trip was going SUP on Lake Tahoe. You can not take pure stone Taho and blue water … it comes out in a beautiful world! We rented SUP boards from Sand Harbor Rentals, located on Sand Harbor Beach in Nevada’s Lake Tahoe State Park. It costs $25 for an hourly SUP rental, $50 for 3 hours and $80 per day (you can also rent a kayak if you prefer a boat). State park admission costs $10 for vehicles and $2 for bicycles.
We chose to take a boat ride from Sand Harbor to Bonsai Rock, which takes about 30-60 minutes each way, depending on how long we stop to take pictures, etc. Bonsai Rock is really beautiful and just about a place to take pictures in fresh water and rocks. Recipe. You can swim perfectly in Lake Tahoe, but be warned it’s still cold in the spring!
For those unfamiliar with the Nevada terrain, Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Nevada. It takes about 55 minutes to drive to Sand Harbor from Reno, a beautiful drive through mountains and pine trees.
Who knew you could ride a white water raft through Reno?! It was a cool experience to get out on the beautiful Truckee River and get the adrenaline pumping. We used a guide company (Wild Sierra) who showed us the ropes and provided us with the equipment. Even as beginners, we still have a lot of fun and will definitely do it again. For those who are not very athletic, you can rent a private boat to travel.

Make sure you wear swimming or exercise clothing (without cotton), dry shoes or trainers, sunscreen and goggles. The sun in Nevada can be very hot! We chose to bring our waterproof action camera (GoPro HERO5 Black) with us to capture some behind the scenes.
Do you want more adventure? Reno Tahoe has great mountain biking trails. We chose the steepest of them all – the Flu Trail. This trail is famous for a reason…you can’t beat the view of Lake Tahoe and the boat ride through the Alps. Cycling the Flume Trail is a moderately difficult route with a range of 14 miles at 7,000 to 8,000 feet. The hardest part is climbing the first 1000 feet in the first 4 miles (before you get to the fun part!).
If you’re afraid of heights or don’t like steep roads, this isn’t the trip for you because the Flume Trail itself has many sections of trails and open spaces. Unfortunately, there was a dangerous wind on the day we chose to ride on this road, so we had to change after reaching the bottom. I’m so excited to be back soon and ride the whole trail!
Need a bike? We borrowed ours from Flume Trail Mountain Bikes which felt extremely professional. The team also picked us up and cycled in their bus (perfect!).

For less strenuous holiday options, you can also book bike rentals and hybrid bike hire, both of which come with self-guided tours.
A little less adventurous but a must do… Don’t miss a sunset (or two) in Lake Tahoe during your trip! We love the Golden Hour experience (hours leading up to sunset) in Sand Harbor and it was the perfect opportunity to walk the streets nearby. We also enjoyed exploring Chimney Beach and Bonsai Rock at sunset. I mean, you can’t go wrong watching the sunset in Tahoe, you’ll get beautiful views from every direction on the east side of the lake. Also worth booking a helicopter ride to get a unique view of Lake Tahoe.
The sun is setting faster than expected in Tahoe! This is because the mountains to the west block the horizon so that the lake loses light about 20 minutes before the actual sunset.
Reno is the closest city to Burning Man, a world famous festival held every August. People from all over the world to experience diversity and originality
