Property Tax Help

Cook County property tax bills have been delayed for months. Payment is usually due by August 1st. The delay is disappointing for county leaders and government agencies that rely on property tax revenue, including libraries, public schools and park districts.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas explained that all 1.8 million property tax bills are now available online, so taxpayers can download and pay their bills online, pay in person at Chase Bank, or visit Pappas’ office in Cook County Building No. 118. N. Clark Street in downtown Chicago.

“The delay has been so long that we have posted this online now that the city of Chicago has been reassessed, to alert the public, especially commercial lenders and residential lenders who want to know about their bills,” Pappas told the Cook County Treasurer. .com.

You can also check to see if you have a homeowner’s exemption, senior citizen exemption, or senior freeze. Additionally, if you owned the property when the overpayment occurred, you can review your property tax overpayment from 20 years ago and request a refund.

“It was a technological breakthrough that got all of this up and running this morning,” Pappas said.

Chicago taxpayers will see some changes to their tax bills this year because all properties in the city were reassessed last year, Pappas said. This means your bill may change depending on how much your property is appraised for.

Property owners still face a March 1 deadline to file their first property tax bill next year, and Pappas said it’s unclear whether the Cook County Commission will extend that deadline to April 1 after the property tax bill was postponed. The second this year.

“If you’re paying on December 30 and you have to pay on March 1, that’s a little bit of a difficult time, even if people want to avoid having to pay for six months. Money,” Pappas said.
