I’m in the love it camp. It’s free, easy to use, and used by millions of people every day (60 million in the US alone). I’ve been a frequent Craigslist user for almost 10 years now and have sold and bought countless items, including a dozen RVs and cars. Following the recent sale of my 2011 Jeep Compass and purchase of a 1998 Jeep Wrangler, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what works and what doesn’t – what to do and what not to do when selling a vehicle on Craigslist. . This advice is necessary because some people are ignorant and don’t know what they are doing. Luckily, selling on Craigslist isn’t rocket science, but it does take some effort to craft an effective ad that catches potential buyers’ attention and earns their trust. Although the main focus is on selling a Jeep, these tips also apply to selling an RV. So without further ado, here are my 10 Dos and Don’ts for selling a Jeep on Craigslist.

The old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” is especially true when it comes to selling on Craigslist. However, I have seen many ads that have no photos or one or two exterior views of the car and that’s about it. Nowadays almost everyone has a smartphone with an HD camera. I recommend taking at least eight exterior and interior photos of the vehicle. I also recommend a photo of the odometer (buyers want to see proof that what you say about the mileage is true). Be sure to take pictures of any damage. Oh, and please go. Make sure the photos you choose are clear with good lighting and are displayed professionally in your ad (not sideways or upside down. Yes, this is very common).

What is fair and reasonable value? Go to one of the car review websites like Kelley Blue Book, NADA or Edmunds and get one. If you don’t take the time to take this simple step, you may have trouble selling your car. An idiot living here in Phoenix is currently asking $4,000 more than the Blue Book price for his Jeep Wrangler. hello?! No one pays book price for just about any car unless it’s a rare classic or limited edition, in incredible condition and loaded with options and extra features. The guys (and girls) to blame for this are probably those who wonder why their car hasn’t sold even after being listed for over two months.
I often see ads that give me one brief sentence about the car and that’s it. Sure, this brevity will get your ad published faster, but it can also really hurt your chances of getting a quick sale. Buyers want information that will help them separate good cars from bad cars, so take your time and provide a solid paragraph of information about the vehicle’s history, including any modifications and repairs you’ve made. Any existing problems are also included. Oh, and use the data fields provided by Craigslist to sell cars. These fields provide valuable information such as year, mileage, condition and number of cylinders and are widely used by potential buyers when searching for vehicles.
Several years ago, my wife and I found a dirty, smelly, poor excuse for a car with fast food wrappers and stale French fries on the back seat floor. It was obvious that the car had not been touched before the lazy idiot showed it to us. Needless to say, we gave that car away and bought another one. Getting responses doesn’t seem to be a big problem for people who prefer to text, but it is for people who prefer to do business by email. In fact, half the time you don’t get a response and when you do, it’s after two or three days. Very annoying. The main thing is to respond to any questions in a timely manner by phone, email or text. If you have sold your vehicle, indicate that in your answers. Oh, and if you’re planning a meeting, please stay. on time. It is considered very rude to be late for an appointment and is no way to do a potential buyer any favors.
Arizona Craigslist: 10 Project Car Deals Under $5,000
You would think this wouldn’t be a big deal, but here in Phoenix a guy is currently trying to sell his Jeep for less than the asking price. His ad states that he has invested a total of $34,000 in his Jeep. Potential buyers are left guessing about the price, and no one wants to play a game of guessing and waiting on Craigslist. If you want to take offers on your vehicle, Craigslist is not the place to do it, eBay is the place to do it. Not surprisingly, his announcement did not come until two months later. Needless to say, I did not make an offer and wished the guy trying to sell my Jeep like this the best of luck.
This goes hand in hand with number two. I’m tired of salvaged or rebuilt cars trying to get $1,000 under the Blue Book. It is not! According to Consumer Reports, cars with salvage or rebuilt titles are priced at Blue Book 50 percent and sometimes less. Unless you are mechanically inclined and plan on keeping the car forever, I would avoid salvage and rebuilt titled vehicles. They have no way of knowing the full extent of the damage. There is a lot at stake. Insurance is also a problem for some insurance companies.
If there are any issues with the car, mention them in your ad. People appreciate honesty. If you have any questions, this helps build trust and increases your sense of confidence when you want to sell your vehicle. One jeep I saw recently had physical damage that was not mentioned anywhere in the ad or posted photos (incredibly, the condition of this jeep was listed as “excellent” in the ad. Was). If I had known about this damage earlier, I would not have wasted two hours of driving time and gas getting it checked. Needless to say, I was totally freaked out. That’s when I knew this was not someone I wanted to trust or do business with. Oh, and it goes without saying that you have to be honest about the overall condition, excellent means the car is excellent as is today, not after body and engine repairs.
I hear about this happening all the time. Sure, it’s a first-come, first-served policy, but consider the people who travel long distances to buy your item. This situation occurred to me a few years ago when I sold a KZ Frontier travel trailer to a guy in Salt Lake City, 650 miles away. While he was going to Phoenix, another guy in New Mexico offered me another $500 if I sold it. Needless to say, I told the boy, no. There’s no way I’d mess with another guy, even for half a penny of cash. I believe in karma. Treat others the way you want to be treated – the golden rule. If you do, Craigslist is a great resource where you can buy and sell without any losses.

This has probably happened to all of us at one point or another, and it’s one of my favorite complaints. You spend an hour or two reading the listings and find exactly what you’re looking for. Frustrated, you message the guy about his beloved truck, but he says it was sold two weeks ago. What!! Look! If you are using Craigslist to sell your truck for free, the best thing you can do is delete your ad after the sale. It only takes a few seconds and a few clicks to remove your ad. enough said.
