The Hinds County Tax Collector’s Office recently began sending out tax bills, it appears, to homeowners. However, Customs Officer Eddie Fair discovered that the notices were income tax declarations. He said it is an escrow statement intended to inform homeowners of the amount of taxes withheld. “Sometimes people can have a farm (exemption) and not realize they have it (exemption). “But sometimes they can have a residency (exemption) and it’s taken away from them and they don’t understand why their taxes are high,” Fair said. “That way you know exactly what you’re getting.” You know exactly where you are. You don’t have to guess.” Fair said he has received hundreds of calls from people confused by the ads.

Jackson County received the most property assessment appeals. As of October 24, 19,615 complaints were pending out of 54,539 complaints received. The Missouri State Auditor reviews the evaluation process.

You can check your tax returns on the website and in the miJacksonCounty app. Property owners will see bills for their property — such as homes and commercial buildings — as well as vehicles, boats and other personal property registered with the county.
The Jackson County Legislature passed a new Missouri law that provides property tax relief to homeowners age 62 and older who qualify for Social Security benefits, but it won’t affect Jackson County’s tax bill until 2024.
People over the age of 62 can currently enroll in the county’s Senior Square payment program. Thanks to this, they can divide the property tax payment into four installments. These installments are due in December 2023, February 2024, May 2024 and August 2024.
The Legislature also passed a resolution asking the Board of Equalization to complete hearings before tax notices are sent to property owners, but did not provide a way to enforce that requirement. Legislator Charlie Franklin called it “preposterous.”
